Medic!

Recite the Ode after me:
Orange-stripe Orange, Green-Stripe Blue,
Blue-Stripe Green, Brown-Stripe BrownOrange on left
Brown on right
Stripe solid stripe solid
Green green was the worst anime I have ever fucking seen
Green green bad
I hate that this is what works for me
New core memory.
Also: my life improved immensely when I decided to spend 12 quid to buy this:

I literally sploosh every time I use it. Doesn’t matter what the wire, length, thickness, or girth. They crimp all the same
The wall behind me. Chin up, no drooling.

Good crimpers and strippers are worth their weight in what you paid for them in pennies.
I’m impressed mostly by the size of that peg board. They’re surprisingly expensive…!
Are they where you are? That stinks, they are cheap here in the US, especially years ago. All the mounts are custom designed and printed by me: https://nowsci.com/pegboard/
$23 for a 1.2m by 2.4 m wooden pegboard sounds like a dream. Here, you’re looking easily at £100…
Very impressed by your 3d mounts though, I’m still in the process of setting up my Voron. I’m finally down to the electrics, and am getting some weird shorting behaviour with my z-endstop, but slowly and steadily debugging it
Loved my Voron v0.2 build, so much fun and got lucky without many problems. The display kept screwing it up, so disconnected it and it’s been happy since. Which Voron? At that price for pegboard, printing some multi board might be cheaper! I considered doing that since I have a big boy printer, too, but decided to stick with the pegboard.
Mine, hold your excitement, mine crimps from six sides at once!!! SIX!!
Oh shit, should I send mine back?? I got it yesterday, but not sure if I cheaped out. Is 6 better than 4?
I have no clue, probably not 😅
I just wanted to add to it. And I love how the crimp… things close!
And you just stick all the Ethernet wires in? Like a nasty naughty little thing.
What is this?
I know what crimping is, and I know how to terminate an Ethernet cable, but I don’t know why you’d want to crimp 4 things at once and don’t know what those socket things you’re crimping on are?
Ferrules - great for terminal blocks, wagos etc. It’s just for crimping one - the stripped wire goes into the plastic end, and the metal sheathing is crimped down onto the exposed wire.
I need to get some of these for my audio cable
Am I the only one to call them ‘light orange’ instead of ‘orange-stripe’? I know they aren’t that color, yet whenever I’m crimping a cable and have to repeat the colors to get them in order…
“white orange” in my neck of the woods.
Are we sure Lemmy doesn’t have an algorithm? This is the second comment dropping the Golden Crimping Code i see in like 5 minutes
Lemmy Code: Shun capitalism and push crimping products. You will comply.
Finally a thread for me!
I like the protected tabs because barring any absurd workspace dimensions I can use the plastic as extra leverage to press down on the tab with.
And I like sliding the Ethernet Foreskin over the terminal after I’m done assembling it ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Plus you can re-use the covers later for sex later
later for sex later
The time so nice, they said it twice
“Doctor, are you sure this will work!?”
“HAHA, I have NO IDEA!”
I prefer bareback
This is the way.
And ideally, never pull out.
Literally never found myself wanting one of these on my cable. I’ve found myself swearing at them more times than I can remember
You’ve apparently never pulled hundreds of feet of ethernet cable from racks or under raised datacenter floors. Without these, you’re replacing that connector once it pops loose from the tangle without a tab
Who’s pulling hundreds of feet of already terminated cable?
People who work on highrises. Ownership and management really have no concept of what they are asking when they say the server room needs to go from one side of the building to another, especially if there is satellite internet. Fuck satellite internet.
Your infrastructure cabling shouldn’t ever be terminated to rj45. That should always be terminated to a keystone jack.
But even if you’re dealing with cables that were terminated into rj45 and need to be relocated with rj45s at the new location, you should just go ahead and cut the ends off. The cable can get snagged and stuck with the end on.
Broadcast jobs. Every single job you run, and then later pull, dozens or hundreds of data cables.
Oh, labelling? Forget it. You’ll label the first batch, and then be in a frantic rush that nothing else is labelled. Just a messy spreadsheet that you try to not forget.
Couldn’t you tape it over when pulling?
I also have tape
Everyone is right on the internet
The one on the left gets the utility knife circumcision.
If you cut the bottom of the hood halfway, it protects the tab but still squishes to disconnect. I’ve lost too many tabs to the full circumcision.
Guy I used to work with would intentionally break off the latch on every cable he touched, rendering this question moot.

I assume he has since disappeared under mysterious circumstances, at the same time as all of his coworkers were somewhere else on a walk together (or so they swear)
That guy must get around because I have seen far too many cables like that in important racks.
Neither. I choose neither.
Choose B and better switches
If you can’t so that, choose B and use scissors to shorten the guard a hair
One on the right, when asked about “some switches”:

Reboots some switches
How are you rebooting a switch with a connector?
Some dumber manufacturers put the reset button right above a port, such that the clip cover can bump it on insertion.

Sorry, dumb and corrupt manufacturers.
This Cisco field notice has diagrams for the curious.
As some mentioned, Cisco. 10 years ago I had to work with one of it’s partners, and this was a massive deal.
Spent months just making sure everywhere it was stated they had that issue.
Gotta love how “memes” is just computing memes and we are all fine with it anyway.

The one on the right, every day. The one on the left is a pain in the ass to disconnect.
I’m a no boot man, causes more issues then they solve.
yeah same. I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve ripped lock tabs off, meanwhile the number of times the stiff protective boot makes it impossible to unclip when it is cold or more than 5yo is easily in the thousands.
Also reterminating a plug with a broken lock tab takes like 5 minutes to cut and crimp… Or be a real chad and throw a strip of duct tape to hold it in and say fuckit.
Used to run LAN parties. We had a big bag of ethernet cables we inherited from the people who ran it before us, and like 50% of them had no tab. Eventually we chucked them out.
5 min to fix is generous too. That includes finding your tools before and putting them away after.
There’s a secret third option I didn’t include

than*
How is it hard to get right?
Maybe they meant that they solve the issues after causing them. Who can really know?
* poorly designed switches
The one on the right can still have the boot’s tab slip under the plug’s tab, preventing the plug’s tab from being physically depressed far enough to release the plug from the socket.
