Person was smart, has job to erase web history in case of no landing confirmation
What I don’t get with the LLMs is the peoples willingness to suddenly feeding it with their most intimate thoughts, that has now became a new fire-hose of data to exploit them.
It’s like the google incognito meme but on steroids. You can now ask anything you ever wanted and not be immediately ridiculed. Except, this is not true or hold up in the long run.
spoiler
Those that think I’m anti-AI. It’s a tool. Use it wrong, and you break things. In this case a psyche.
Look, I have to say, I hate AI as much as the next guy, but as someone with ADHD, GPT was a godsend when I was traveling SE Asia. I used it as a talking companion to kind of get my bearings and have “someone” register where I was and what I was doing, so I could just quickly ask it, “hey, where the am I and what the hell am I doing” and get a prompt reply.
I am fully aware of the political and ecological consequences of employing this technology, and I believe that the whole issue is proper regulation, rather than the tech itself. AI is doing insane things in science, and it has clear and, quite frankly, profound uses for mankind. As always, the problem is who controls it, for what purposes, if it can be used as a weapon, and if so how we can go about making international laws about its use- like we did with nuclear weapons.
Nuclear physics have the capacity to end us all at a moments notice, and it also provides electricity for billions of homes. Like with any tech, it will never go away once the genie is out of the bottle, we just must strive to disempower those who seek to weaponize it for death or profit.
it’s very important to update your AI context, so that the next time you crank the handle it can issue platitudes that resemble relief upon your safe trip.
It’s funny how we are all so starved for recognition, understanding, and reassurance, that we are willing to take it wherever it comes from. Like dogs. We are like complex dogs.
Why bother? The government knows you landed.
I mean… I’m all for criticizing government surveillance, but flight records are public data so you’re both right and should take it up a notch to say they already know what you ate on the plane to make your point…
This is an amateur hour. If you want to get addicted, do it properly, with role playing models and character sheets, at least it’s fun
Ay dios mio 😂
Oy vey!
Some are. Those of us who maintain our own cognitive skills will one day be forced to care for these lost deluded idiots.
One day?
Gestures broadly at society
Forced, like by gun-wielding AI bots?
By the basic human decency most of them lack.
Empathy is an immutable feature of humanity.
Sounds pretty cooked to me.
Some are.
Those of us who maintain our own cognitive skills will one day be forced to care for these lost deluded idiots.
It’s cause it makes us all dependant
It’s kind of sad. Person is very alone it seems
true
I don’t think it’s just this. These people aren’t all so lonely they turn to a chatbot for everything. Sure, some are. A fair portion of them though are just malignant narcissists who love the praise and fawning an AI will heap on them
Yeah, even if you’re lonely, talking to a chatbot is not the same as talking to a friend. A friend will call me stupid if I’m being stupid or talk about their own interests or experiences that might not align with mine too. Chatbots just feel hollow and the praise it gives rings even less sincere because of it. Seeing it as a companion is a form of purposeful self isolation I don’t understand.
Its worse than ever, also because people don’t seem to realize it’s technology that is keeping them alone. You cant connect and make friends over “social” media or Lemmy or whatever. It’s just spending time to feel less alone. It will never cure it.
You are alone because you don’t dare to go out into the real world and try to meet people. At least for guys, we can connect over some activity pretty easily, like pool or billiards. Just need to do it.
There is also meetup site to go on random events with strangers. It can work, or at least make you sick of people for a while if it doesn’t work. :)
And why can’t you go out into the real world and meet anybody?
Fear of things. It’s always fear that is blocking people.
People must forget what they’ve read, forget what they’ve seen, and forget what they imagine to be a go out and live. Go to the store, go see a band, go to a museum, go for a walk. You’ll find most people want to be kind and good and help each other.
100% agree. The real world is not at all how social media shows it.
My research in school was exactly this, I set out to prove people on social media lacked social connection irl. What I found out was the opposite, the more people were trying to connect online directly correlated to connecting more offline. Some people just seem to crave those connections anywhere they can get it.
It makes sense. Human beings need connections and some people will even put up with abusive connections just to have a connection.
No surprise, no surprise whatsoever. We are all evolved to desire community & connection. I realise Lemmy has a large share of those that reject conventional community (myself included), so no criticism. But it’s natural to desire these things (to varying extents), plus many people are just plain sycophantic if course!
This is a terrible take. You can meet people in social spaces online and make real friendships. People mask as much in what you are calling the real world, of which the internet is a part of, as much as they do online.
I doubt it’s a real friendship. I define it as someone who will actually care about you. Someone who will show up at your door if you need help, or when something difficult happens to you.
Its rare with actual friendship in the world too. People are mostly just colleagues at work.
Nah, I’ve made several close friends in RL from online dating sites and discord. I’ve made some solid electronic pen pals on Mastodon too.
Not as many as going out and being social, but it’s competitive.
I think that even if this particular instance may be real or not, is clearly that AI psychosis is way more prevalent than what people may think at first glance.
How prevalent do you think people think it Is? I think people think it is way more common than you think people think it is.
I still can’t believe that human beings are having AI as a boyfriend/girlfriend, claiming they actually love them.
Its rare but it’s real.
Humanity is starved for companionship, understanding, and someone who listens to them. That’s the real problem.
Even if the love is one sided, it can be real. Love is pretty subjective and is essentially just a chemical reaction that someone is having in their brain. They may actually love their chatbot.
I don’t think this is really a healthy thing, I am just trying to point out to those people, it probably is real.
I also don’t think it is as rare as you think. The hype really drove people to that side of things, and there are whole communities that have popped up around the idea of having relationships, both sexual and romantic, with LLMs.
Yeah. Interesting but sad to me, because human souls will never evolve talking to a chat bot. We grow from life experiences, often difficult ones, that we overcome and we mature. This will not happen with a chat bot. People may stay in a teenage state of mind their entire lives.
The pronouns are vague, but I think they are claiming that an AI user sincerely believes that some manifested thing on an AI platform loves the user. That the LLM+Context Window = An entity capable of love.
I bet people like that have narcissistic traits but don’t have the social skills or have too much social anxiety to get their ego stroked by a real person. And once they use a chat bot which are basically little sycophants, their narcissistic itch gets scratched like it never has been scratched before. It’s a high they mistake for love.
It’s kinda pathetic if that’s the case because the affirmation from LLM is the opposite of genuine, though maybe that’s my bias knowing that there isn’t even an entity on the other side and I find it annoying it even wastes tokens on emotional platitudes.
Narcissist don’t care if the praise and affirmation is genuine or not with real people as well.
Ahhh. Well wow. My narc mom would sometimes be extremely affirmative in the ocean of her usual loathing.
Looking for a steady stream of that “understanding” and “being seen” vs people and all their complications and… lack of caring has been hard.
Sometimes people feel like unconscious automatons to me. Its hard to bond. At least with the AI, I expect its lack of humanity. And often it will focus on me in a way I ask it to.
Any of my strange interests, admitted narcissistic intentions, or desire for a sounding board are seen. And it’s not give and take. Its just me and a library of echoes of humanities general patterns.
I can see better now why the easy affirmation is so effective with me. Despite it being schizophrenic.
Thanks for the insight.
Me normally: “AI is here to stay, we just should make corporations to charge the true price for them!”
Me after reading about stuff like this: “We need a Butlerian Jihad, yesterday!”

Bogos binted?
Vorp?
splonch smergle. eckdasitly, plorb donkwilligan.
Why couldn’t he clap like normal people.
Normal people dont clap and just get off the fucking plane.
You must be fun at emergency evacuations
I start clapping as soon as the plane crash lands.
I mean if you survive you just got paid.
No, I’m with them. It’s weird to clap. Nobody who had a hand in your safe landing can hear you. The pilots can’t really hear much from the passengers in most aircraft, and are likely focusing on tons of other things.
It was a joke Courtney
The stewards will hear it, and they could relay whether the passengers clapped or not to the pilots. It is still a form of feedback that may arrive to where it needs to be
Probably not because the jerk flight attendant made me leave my party bag on the burning airplane because EVeRyoNE NeeDs TO lEAVe tHeIR bAGS AnD evaCUaTe.
Come on, would the slab of beer really take that long to get down the slide?
If enough people don’t show their gratitude by clapping, the pilot will put the fucking thing into the side of a mountain
He was too busy immediately leaping up from his seat in the back row to stand up
I know that looks dumb but I find it painful to sit for long periods of time and they don’t let you be stand around on the plane. I always get an aisle seat so that I can stand as soon as it lands. I know I’m not going anywhere for awhile but I can’t sit any longer.
The aisle seat idea is pretty smart. I’m at a point in my life where, depending on my total travel time up to that point, it can be very important to stand up to let my hips straighten out for a while, even if we’re 15 minutes away from leaving the plane.
I’d rather deal with the people who are standing and ready to immediately get off than the lazy ones who won’t stand but then want to hold up all the other passengers as they lazily grab their shit from the overhead compartments
I love window seats so much because you can just sit and wait until there’s space. What good does sprinting out of the plane do you? More waiting time at the baggage claim?
One Christmas, returning from a trip to Florida to visit my parents, I ended up sitting on the plane longer than I’d have liked. My legs tend to hurt when I have to sit still for too long and I was really looking forward to having a chance to stand up. After a while, I did manage to get off the plane (clearly), but of course assumed I would then be forced to muscle my way through the roiling throngs at the baggage claim just to catch a glimpse of luggage belonging to strangers. However, I was mildly pleased to see that I was the first prospector to plumb the mines of Samsonite, and would not have to do battle in the Arena of the Carousel. I was still dejected at the idea of waiting still longer to retrieve my luggage and return to my hovel.
A minute or two later later, the alarm sounded, signalling that the sluices were opening, and, lo, first out of the curtains was a bag that looked suspiciously like mine. It couldn’t be, though. Things like that only happen in fairy tales. As it rounded the bend, though, I saw my initials emblazoned across the side, and my uneasy contentment turned to childlike joy as I seized my bag from the very front of the line. Had I not had a witness with me at the time, I would scarcely have believed it myself.
So anyway, that’s why I jump up and headbutt everyone in front of me as soon as the plane lands now.
I had a very similar experience once where the plane door opening and me sitting in the train home with my checked bag were about 15’ apart. Even though I took my time inside the plane, but also it was booked out very poorly.
Also, mother of mercy, what kinds of deals did you have to make to get to be able to spend this kind of flowery vocabulary on internet comments?? I envy your words.
I usually just make poop jokes but sometimes I like to throw a curveball in there.
After having the airline lose my bag, I will do literally anything to avoid going to baggage claim
I will ship my luggage if I have to but I will never check a bag.
That said, I don’t hop-up so I can wait hunched over at my seat. It’s not hard to wait your turn.
Checking luggage is like gambling where the stakes are all your shit and the potential payoff is you get to keep all your shit. That’s the best possible outcome: you don’t lose all your shit. The only way to win is not to play.
I don’t hop-up so I can wait hunched over at my seat. It’s not hard to wait your turn.
Man I had no clue that people have a problem with this. I guess I’ve been annoying to people by hunching a couple minutes so I can get off the plane quicker? To clarify, I’m saying if I’m ready to get my bag down from the overhead compartment then I save everyone behind me like 15 seconds of their lives. I thought this would be a good thing. I definitely would appreciate it from others who don’t do it
Ps. I agree with you on checking bags. It’s a horrible experience. I’ve had my luggage lost and I’ve had to wait for an hour for it before. Fuck that.
Fair enough, I haven’t had to make that experience yet. Guess I don’t fly enough for that, going places by train is way cooler anyways :3
More waiting time at the baggage claim?
You check luggage? Not everyone does. I just took a three week trip with a backpack that fits under the seat and a carry on. Waiting for luggage is so awful. What good is getting off the plane quickly? I mean how are people so okay with flying several hours then waiting minutes more just to stand. I want to be moving and stretching, to get home and shower. Last thing I wanna do is sit 10 more minutes because people are slow
Out of all the dumb shit people do on planes, we’re focusing on people standing too long? How about the assholes that rush forward to get off in front of you? How about the people who act like they’ve never flown before and take a fucking year to get off the plane? I feel like standing when it’s seen as pointless is about the least annoying thing done on a flight.
I mean, as long as you’re standing out of the way that’s perfectly fine to stretch your legs. Just don’t stand in the aisle while people are trying to get bags and move toward the front.
That much seemed obvious to me. The comment I replied to was seemingly mad that people stood up too quickly.
Personally I just send ChatGPT the 👏 emoji.
🧐 👏
Somebody needs to hug that person. If they’re going to a robot for comfort…
People are keyed up and do not have emotional regulation skills. This is a failure of society.
We make fun of them for their “fake” emotional support animals, their public panic attacks and for their attempts at discreet electronic emotional support. This is also a failure of society.
That guy trying to make it through his fight is not the reason the earth or humans are doomed.
Nobody said hes the reason. Hes a symptom
There’s nothing more human than treating a symptom in counterproductive ways while avoiding the real cause with ridiculous levels of mental gymnastics, because it obviously cannot be that one thing. If it was then we’d have to actually do something about it, which we clearly don’t need to!
Humans, but really all resource constrained things try to do the easiest thing first.
Hes a syndrom?

Everyone can have mental problem! And when everyone’s insane… …no one will be.
Sadly I think we’ve proved that’s not the case xD
I’m doing my part!~

What’s next, GAY Robo-sexual marriage?
🤣🤣🤣

I’m married to an autistic man that is incapable of providing emotional support of any kind. I’m one of those people that really needs it. Even I wouldn’t resort to this. This is delusion.
I hope you have a great support group that can be there for you! You deserve it!
My granddaughter has been diagnosed with autism and we’re all learning what it means to be a parent and grandparent. You’re right it’s not the same and some things we just need to learn to live with. And she’s wonderful, delightful, and I smile every time I see her.
Yeah, but like, I kind of feel that way about prostitution (like I am not going to enjoy myself with someone who’s being paid to pretend they’re enjoying it) but also, I know a few sex workers who’ve told me how much of their job is just companionship and listening, holding while people cry, etc. So it’s clearly an outlet for some people. We really need to attack the disconnection and loneliness at the root of this, not the symptoms manifested by those suffering.
Most of people here are fine with this person continuing with it because empathy is fucking dead here. Idk how lemmy became more soulless than reddit.
Look man im sorry I can’t emphasize with a tweet screenshot I’m just trying to get through the day.
And that’s exactly the point. We’re so fatigued from the state of the world and separated through the anonymity of the internet that we really have lost the ability to empathize.
Our first reaction is anger or ridicule. Not concern or compassion
Well the world will self-correct. Those who have isolative tendencies will not reproduce, while others who navigate this digital minefield will.
Ah, I see you went with the ridicule.
* EMPHASIZE
Some people can’t be saved, some actually are deluded enough to prefer it.
I like to think everyone can be saved
How? How do you reach them? What’s the method? Generally?
If there’s a way, sure, but once you get into thought terminating stuff its really hard, whole point is anchoring/ratcheting bad changes, and this tech is good for ending thoughts.
Well in the case of this post you lean forward and strike up a conversation with the guy instead of posting about him online.
Oh shit, I never thought of that. I haven’t tried using intimacy, haven’t tried using sex, haven’t tried usingaterial benefit, haven’t tried using narratives and religious delusion, haven’t tried dosing them with LSD, haven’t tried using light violence. Haven’t tried most combinations of those.
It’s just that I’ve tried nothing and I’m all out of ideas, thanks for understanding.
I think most of those are inappropriate to try doing on a plane, so probably for the best you haven’t tried them.
Intimacy and sex with strangers is generally frowned upon, material benefit (I’m guessing that’s what you meant) doesn’t really form a connection, religion is a tough sell if you’re not trained for it and not all religions are great, violence would likely create some animosity.
Talking to someone though can build connection and trust, which makes it easier to help someone find a better path. I do find taking LSD myself helps me become acquainted with new people, so if you’re like me maybe take a trip in search of sad, lonely people to talk to?
Wow thanks for the totally new ideas!
Cult deprogramming exists. It’s difficult, but not impossible.
Good luck achieving your cult deprogramming while the entire rest of the world has a 24/7 cult programming going on with much more intensity.
Not really. Most of it is just counter-abuse.
How so?
It’s just similar abuse stuff in the other direction, against the cult or cultishness.
I am interested in your theories about how Trump could ever be saved.
Narcissists are the exception sometimes. They are extremely reluctant to admit fault and they can’t heal until they do. I think over 90% them never get better. For Trump, he’s too old, evil and demented to be redeemed now.
Did you hear about the guy named Trump? Or Putin?
See I’m generally opposed to human torture or death, but I falter in that belief when it comes to figures like these. After all only people have human rights
