Yeah, our lab is excited every-time one explodes. When we do backyard fireworks, the main concern is holding her back so she doesn’t shove her face in them.

if a dog isn’t bothered by it what’s the problem?

I’d rather fireworks be opt-in by way of traveling to a fireworks show than being forced to endure most of my neighbors setting off explosives for no good fucking reason

Because it’s simply not a suitable place for an animal that can be unpredictable under stress. You dog freaks out because of the stress of fireworks, large crowds, strangers, new place, etc. and suddenly flips the script. Not a bad dog, but an idiot owner. Your dog bites someone. Now what?

Unless you’re willing to accept having to pay 700 bucks to kill your dog afterwards and pay whatever costs come from any treatment for the victim, and be barred from pet ownership, don’t bring your animal to public events for humans.

I hate this argument “my dog is nice” TO YOU.

You might be over-reacting a bit.

I’ve had dogs that had no problems with fireworks - and one lab that would try and chase them if not kept on-leash - and dogs that are terrified of them. If the dog isn’t afraid of fireworks then it’s like any other public situation… keep your dog on-leash and don’t take them out at all if they are a risk to others.

There’s a particular, subtle phrase hidden very deep in literally the first sentence of the comment you’re responding to that I think kinda refutes your entire tangent: “if a dog isn’t bothered by it…”

This would assume that as the dog owner you already know your dog is not going to be stressed by fireworks and/or groups of people. If we were talking about a dog which hadn’t yet ever seen/heard/experienced fireworks then I’d agree that your described scenario is a possible outcome, but that would contradict literally the first 7 words of the comment you’re responding to

You missed the entire closing sentence. Your dog is good to YOU. A public event is not a place for pets. It doesn’t matter how well you know your dog because your dog doesn’t know a stranger.

Adding to that, if your dog bites someone are you okay with taking to the vet and paying $500 to kill it? Are you okay with taking the blame entirely and potentially getting your shit absolutely wrecked because of it?

This is such a stupid conversation. A dog is a possession. You own it. This like asking if you can bring a knife or gun to a fireworks show, it just doesn’t make sense. Both those two things are infinitely safer than a dog because you can predict what they’ll do.

          What is wrong with people?

My dog loves fireworks for some dumb reason.

To the point where I think if he could he’d run to find where they are coming from and try to bite them.

My old dog was a puppy when the local baseball team won the world series. We took him outside after the game, and our neighbor behind us started lighting off some pretty big fireworks.

The first one or two startled him a little, but he saw that we weren’t reacting and quick settled down. Then he started to enjoy them. He’d watch the neighbors light one up, watch it shoot into the sky and explode, and then back to the neighbor, tail wagging waiting for another one.

After that, any time he heard them going off somewhere he’d run around to the windows trying to get a better look. If he could find a good angle he’d happily stand there and watch the entire show.

My current dog just doesn’t react to them at all. We got her at about a year old, so I don’t know what, if anything, her previous humans did to desensitize her, but at most she just kind of groans and rolls over if they’re close enough to disturb her nap. I actually use them as a good excuse to take her for a walk because she is kind of dog-reactive and I know no one else is going to be out walking their dogs during the fireworks.

Dogs are the best. Who fucking knows what they are thinking. A friend of mine has a dog who isn’t really food driven, but do you know what he fucking loves? Raw baby spinach leaves. Ohhh boy, if you open a bag of spinach in front of that dog, you best be giving some to him. Funny little creatures they are. All of them with their own quirks. But all of them the best.

We discovered how much my last tux cat loved watermelon when we cut one in half, got distracted by I don’t know it’s not important, came back in half an hour and she was standing in the watermelon devouring it. She had eaten half while my back was turned. I’m not even sure I can eat that much watermelon that fast, it was a big melon and she went down to the green. I stop at the white. We made sure to buy her a new melon every week while they were in season, but we kept her to much more reasonable portions.

And God forbid I gently blow on my dogs face. This is akin to waterboarding for him. But he will happily stick his head out of a car window at full speed.

I don’t always understand why dogs are the way they are, but I sure am happy that they are.

Idk how people can do this. Like, I was invited to a 4th of July party and I wasn’t going to go if I couldn’t find someone to sit with my dogs. I ended up paying my mom to watch them for me. My beagle is terrified of fireworks and he has reactions to emergency anxiety meds, so just sitting with him and keeping him company and hugging him is very important. Apparently he had a great time lol. My doodle doesn’t give a shit about fireworks. She’s just down to do whatever the beagle is doing lol.
