Still reeling from a moment from a McCain rally where it more or less went:

Woman: “But Barack Hussein Obama is a Muslim!”

McCain: “No ma’am, he’s an upstanding American. I don’t agree with his policies, but he’s a good man.”

The implication of course being that those are mutually exclusive things.

You could read it that way, you could also read the “no ma’am” as a rebuke, like “no, that’s uncalled for, we aren’t doing that here”

I was never a McCain fan and I personally think civility politics are stupid (I want to go back to having brawls in Congress), but I think this is a case of uncharitable interpretation

It’s not a mystery, McCain was big into civility. We can intuit his meaning here, instead of picking the words apart

Did you expect them to sell themselves based on their identity and then to come at their competitor with arguments based on ideology? Of course they’re making this about identity.

Good. They should be. Their entire world view on socialism, caring for others, and brown people doing nice things is about to completely implode in real time. Everything they’ve been told, everything they’ve believed, everything they completely commit their every life to is about to change. They may have to gasp have some introspective on how they view the world outside of their bubble.

      That must be fucking terrifying.

I read something somewhere… Sometime. The gist of it was that, to some people, their personal beliefs, they are so heavily vested in them, so completely inside a bubble, that anything that threatens that bubble evokes an emotional response akin to a fear of death, because in a sense, if they give up everything they ever believed in, they die. That self has to die to accept reality. And for some, for many, that deal is simply too tough to take, so they double down. Humans get set in their way, and sometimes with extreme stubbornness, and the older they get the worse it gets. At some point, you’ve invested so much of who you are into your whole life that is has become you. If anything threatens the cohesion of that maze of emotions and thoughts, they react with visceral fear, or aggression, to protect the integrity of their whole sense of self and personality.

Death of ego is a scary thing. Especially in a group, and one you depend on for your survival.

Shit, sorry if I’m rambling, there was an interesting thought in there, it’s a bit Freudian but it’s a thought I’ve mulled over for a long time.

Oh no, you summed up what I was trying to say far better than I did. I wasn’t entirely joking in my comment. I was 100% serious (albeit with sarcastic undertones). But it’s genuinely a real thing. People would rather die than change or believe anything outside of what they have known or been told to believe for so many years.

Admitting you were wrong is a bitter pill to swallow under the best of circumstances.

I was continuing the conversation. MAGA can’t admit they were wrong, ever, because admitting you are wrong is very hard even in simple cases. We all know that, we all feel that. Apologizing is hard, and a true life skill.

But imagine if everyone around you is also MAGA, and all your best friends are MAGA, and your store clerk is MAGA, and your child’s teacher is MAGA, and all your church members are MAGA.

Then it becomes a matter of survival to stay MAGA, because imagine if you’re the odd one out. You might as well come out as baptist in a Calvinist enclave, you know. It’s a cult. You can’t be wrong, because if you are, your life might as well be over.

I hope it clears up my comment.

The match rarely goes off, mostly just hounding, even if you have a completely blank profile, some 60 year old dude will message you, like no even if I were desperate, I could literally just holler in a Walmart parking lot for a bit.

  • This meme illustrates both fundamental campaign strategies.

Progressive Democrats offer a platform, some specific policies they seek out to move forward.

Republicans stick to slogans, culture war issues and demonizing political opponents with thought-terminating clichés.

    • Starting with the economists, we are slowly coming to realize merely taxing billionaires isn’t enough to save all of civilization.

Especially since the ultra-wealthy are already aggressively pushing to dominate the world through political takeover, spending hundreds of millions to change outcomes of elections. They can afford to seize control of all governments this way.

And billionaires have already announced their vision for the future of humanity, to live in luxury, automating as much as possible. They intend to leave most of us to languish in reservations to starve, including their wealthy near-peers, keeping only essential workers in squalor and bonded servitude.

Some have even written manifestos to this effect. There are alresy projects for Ayn Rand style billionaire cities, a la Rapture or Opportunity, already in the works.

We need to not only strip billionaires of their billionaire status by redistributing their (ill-gotten) spoils, but then assure that billionaires cannot be made again.

That’s patriarchy, not Islam. Inform yourself about christianity and you’ll find much the same. It’s just a different flavour of misogyny. In medieval times, arabic/islamic countries were the educated centers of culture and christian Europe was the barbaric part of the world. Now the scale looks tipped the other way. All the while, evangelical misogynists kill women by denying them life-saving treatments when they are suspected to be pregnant.

All religions are fucked up. If any of them was truly about belief, and not controlling people (and especially women’s bodies), there’d be zero need for an institutionalized belief system.

It doesn’t though, some Muslims do. Just like some Christians do. You got mad when someone else used a No True Scotsman argument, but “Islam oppresses women” implicitly uses the exact same argument. “Islam oppresses women, therefore any “Muslim” that doesn’t, isn’t practicing real Islam.”
