I think it absolutely laid down the base for the modern progressive movement - mistakenly believing protests do anything on their own

Occupy was huge, it was global and persisted for a long time, but it didn’t have any teeth - people just stopped paying attention and eventually police cleared people out

They made their feelings known… But most people had no idea why or what they wanted, and politicians don’t actually care what you want. They didn’t even organize enough to be a voting block or clearly communicate their message

Well… The EU further increasing their regulations and punishments on US mega corps would be welcome. Official programs for medical tourism would also be nice, even in countries without universal healthcare the costs are cheaper even with a round trip flight to another continent

We also have a very impulsive and narcissistic manchild about to return to the white house. He’s deeply insecure and likes to project - if figures mock and laugh at him publicly enough from the right angle, he’ll respond. He’s a wildcard so it’ll be like hearding cats, but in the absurdist state of the country it could actually help us

Or it can be as simple as treating us like oppressed victims. The US as the land of freedom and opportunity is an image that holds us back… We’re not very free and we have very few opportunities (unless you’re rich). Chipping holes in that facade really gets to some people

I don’t understand what switching parties even really means in this context. The parties aren’t written into the framework in the first place, is she just going to run Republican next time? Is she flipping on her positions? Do they all hang out at Republican county clubs? Is she compromising and kissing the ring to further her own policies? Is she just picking the most politically advantageous moves and actually has no strong beliefs? (Probably the last one)

You bring up an interesting point, but there’s a bit more to it that has been downplayed in most history books

They were two sides of the same coin

MLK did not protest for support or to display their convictions - it was done to fight the legal system. They staged events to get arrested and charged for crimes relating to segregation and rights denied to them - then the lawyers came into play. They challenged the constitutionality of the laws, over and over. They overwhelmed the courts so much it hampered their ability to function. They lost plenty, but every small win persisted and chipped the laws down little by little

The black Panthers were an implied threat - “were watching, and we’re armed too. We’ll play by the rules if you do”. They primarily upheld the rule of law, by limiting extra-legal punitive crackdowns on Black communities. There was some less reactive violence, but that wasn’t their purpose

Civil disobedience wasn’t peaceful for optics, it was a third path strategy to turn the system against itself. Returning the violence would defeat the primary purpose, because it would weaken the legal challenge

All that being said, the two organizations were separate wings of the same movement. They both played important roles, one faught for fair laws, the other for fair application of the law. Their methods were incompatible though, so they needed strong separation

The media is trying hard to spin this one - how are they going to spin his story to make it not look justified? Was it his wife? His child? Himself? All of the above?

If he gets to tell his story, I’m certain it’s going to make this look even more justified. People who get their news mostly from mainstream media might have sympathy for the victim now, but letting him tell his story, or even becoming a martyr

That’s what always gets me. You can’t spend a billion dollars on yourself - you could live in the highest possible luxury, waited on hand and foot by the best, and you’re barely going to eat up half of it in a lifetime - even if your money earned no interest

They’re not even happy. They’re hated by many, idolized by others, and the rest want to leech off them. They don’t even have good relationships among their peers, it’s like a never ending dick measuring contest

If they act like a nazi, such as saying Nazi-like things, organizing for Nazi-aligned causes, or spreading hate/violence, you respond appropriately. From social rejection to disrupting them to outright violence, you fight.

Otherwise, how do you even know they’re a Nazi? They might be an idiot swayed by propaganda on fox, they might be an edge lord looking for a reaction, they might be a reformed former Nazi. They might just give you weird vibes and not be a Nazi at all.

These are people we need to reform, not herd into the Nazi echo chambers to become full blown Nazis. They still exist whether you accept them or not

If you want less Nazis in the world, either you kill Nazis, you reduce their recruitment, or you reform them.

That’s what tolerance is- you don’t make assumptions about the person, you say “these behaviors are tolerable, these ones aren’t”

We’re talking a few dozen atoms in the wrong place, the tolerances are minuscule when you’re making modern chips. A small problem in the supply chain, process, or the building itself could all kill your yield

Yes, the surface area in the latter is far greater, but in addition to the surface area you have the structure - the weave itself grants strength, because when you pull the rope the fibers compress against each other, making it stronger than just surface area contact

I think it’s kinda like that, surface area certainly plays a big part, but I think it’s more than that. It lets the muscles reweave themselves - as opposed to the skin and the uterus lining, which are cut in straight lines to minimize damaged surface area - they’re more like cloth than rope, you stitch them up in neat lines

If anyone doesn’t follow the social contract, you respond appropriately based on the situation

It’s inappropriate in pretty much all situations to express a desire for ethnic cleansing. It’s inappropriate to say bigoted things. It’s extremely inappropriate to act towards such goals. You should respond appropriately based on the context, as per the social contract

There’s no paradox. You accept the nazis, until they start acting like nazis. If they keep that shit buried deep down, you tolerate them. If they don’t, they’ve broken the social contract

It’s not like it’s a real war. We get to go about our lives, because they need us, we don’t need them. We just have to make feelings known, maybe organize into unions and political action groups

The most impactful thing we could do is nothing. If everyone takes a month off work, refuses to pay rent and fights eviction in court, the economy would go “poof”. They can’t fight us directly - they’d lose all of the power they love so much

They get to deal with the like people they’ve made desperate. They get to be afraid of the consequences of their actions, to fear walking the streets freely. They can live in their little bubbles of wealth, but in the end that need means locking themselves in a golden cage. They can hire all the security they want - that just means they’ll be shuttled from the airport and back in reinforced cars, only able to feel the Sun in their locked down compounds

There won’t be a war, but there will be more desperate people if nothing changes. If they want to feel safe walking the streets, they just need to take less so everyone else has something to lose

It’s not about the surface area, a tear heals without creating a straight line of inflexible scar tissue in flexible tissue. You recover faster and better, because you distribute the new connections throughout the tissue, you don’t have this one rigid perforation to tear, so you don’t have to be healed up all the way before you can get back on your feet

In general, it’s the opposite though - a sharp cut heals much faster than a rip, there’s far less damage to repair
