Mormon leaders, military veterans and elected officials reacted with anger to a new Department of Defense policy that does not consider The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to be a Christian religion as part of a wider effort to cut down the U.S. military’s list of recognized faiths.

“The Pentagon’s decision to list The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints apart from other Christian faiths is wrong and needs to be corrected,” Republican Rep. Mike Kennedy, of heavily Mormon Utah, wrote on X on Sunday.

Oh boy don’t get the Mormons at the government or they will dress up as Native American and attack a army outpost and blame it on the Native Americans…

Oh so this is what it takes to get Christians mad.

I guess the suffering, death, conquest, pestilence, sexual deviance, etc. of the Republican party and Trump administration wasn’t enough. But don’t you dare suggest LDA aren’t Christian!

Why does the DoD get to decide who are the Christians and who aren’t in the first place?

Dude is officially the least popular president in American history.

Unfortunately that only means something if Republicans refuse to vote for him, and most Republicans I know would vote for literally anybody running as a Republican just to minimize any chance of a Democrat getting elected. About the only way I could see Republicans refusing to vote for the Republican candidate is if we were in some bizzaro world where the Republican candidate was a black queer woman and the Democrat was a white straight man (although I would happily pay thousands of dollars to witness the absolute knots all the racist Republican bigots would tie themselves into trying to square that circle).

I mean we’re 12th or 13th down the list already. They been coming for a hell of a lot of us longer than mormons have existed.

And let’s be honest, the mormons try to be the They in that poem as often as they can.

In fairness, do traditional Christian faiths really consider the LDS church as a Christian variant?

It has Jesus in it, and in claims lineage with existing christy faiths the same way Christianity claims to be a continuation of the Jewish faith and Islam to be a continuation of both, but the rest of the whole Josepth Smith thing is… well, let’s say colorful to put it kindly.

I grew up Catholic in Utah and no Catholic I knew saw the LDS church as anything other than a crazy cult that strangely succeeded.

I grew up Lutheran and we didn’t really consider Catholics Christian. So I assume most Christians don’t consider LDS folks Christian. Unless they’re trying to pad their stats.

What? I grew up atheist, but that sounds absolutely mental to me. Protestantism is an off-shoot of Catholicism, so if Catholics aren’t Christian then surely neither was Martin Luther?

Many protestants see Catholics’ reverence for saints (to the point of literally praying to them) as idols or graven images.

Something like 20-30% of all the Ten Commandments is about that, so I’m not sure that I can blame them.

I mean it doesn’t change the reality that they’re Christians, but still.

I learnt that in Sri Lankan, they don’t really have the word Protestant in their vocabulary, so they just say Catholic and (implied non-Catholic) Christian. I imagine it’s like that in a lot of parts of the world that’s majority Christian, where Christian just becomes a word meaning denomination unspecified whilst Catholic is a whole other thing. Though I have also heard people say they thought Catholics did that count as Christians, due to misconceptions about worshiping Mary and the saints being disqualifying because “you shall have no gods before me”.

There is no way to define Christianity objectively. It’s extremely diverse and pinning down features is theology so your leaving objectivity.

The only thing left is to accept any group that identify as christian.

Yes the Joseph Smith story is colorful, but so is speaking in tongues, believing the earth is six thousands years old, that bread becomes the literal body of God in your mouth or the Trinity. Not all the group that claims to be christians believes all these things but you would recognize most of these as christians.

There are some pretty specific teachings in mormianity that mainstream Christians point at to claim Mormons aren’t Christian. If you’re interested in the specifics, most if it comes from the King Follett discourse and the subsequent Adam-God doctrine, but the short version is that Mormons believe that God used to be a person like you and I, and has his own God, like a GrandGod for us, and that sufficiently good humans can become a God like him, like God Jr. Many Christians think this belief diminishes the role of God and Christ, since they aren’t particularly special, just one more link in an eternal chain.

It’s kind of weird that they’re trying to bucket a bunch of religions under a single moniker anyway. They’re all related sure, but if you’re going that route you might as well go all in and just make the category Abrahamic religions.

Fundamentally that has always been the problem with Christianity, none of them can agree on whether the others are “real Christians” or not, and half of them hate the other half. LDS is just the latest and kookiest of the lot (although I admit it’s exceptionally weird, only Scientology has it beat and that “religion” was literally thought up as a way to scam idiots).

The only thing that changed was that the DoD official religion list (simultaneously reduced from 200 choices to 30ish) officially marks mormonism as its own separate class of religion and not part of Christianity.

Which, well when one of the central tenets of your faith is explicitly that all other religions (specifically Christian religions) are exploitive and dishonest, and that you believe all of the Christian churches’ tenets, creeds, beliefs and rites are “abominable before [their god]”. So of course Christianity is going to reject mormons and mormonism. The mormons reject the Christians anyways (except for when they are looking for new victims mormons) so this “we are too Christians” bullshit from Salt Lake City just reeks of the weird kid in the lunchroom begging to popular table to eat lunch together.
