So, with luck, by 2035 they’ll be back to where they were in 1973?
[This also goes for the USA]
I’m not saying it’s an equal society for women but…
Illiteracy among women has been on a decrease since 1970, when it was 54 percent, to the year 2000 when it was 17.30 percent.
Iranian female education went from a 46 percent literacy rate, to 83 percent
According to a UNESCO world survey, at the primary level of enrollment, Iran has the highest female-to-male ratio in the world among sovereign nations, with a girl-to-boy ratio of 1.22: 1.00
According to UNESCO data from 2012, Iran has more female students in engineering fields than any other country in the world.
Women participate more in the workplace (still far from equal). Women’s workforce participation rate went from 9.1 percent in 1996 to 14 percent in 2004 to 31.9 in 2009.
I personally think the US and Iran have more alignment than the US and Saudi Arabia. True, the Saudis are trying to modernize but women could drive and vote (even if the vote is a farce) in Iran well before Saudi Arabia. Iran also has a relatively young population which is less opposed to Westernism. Not condoning the authoritarian government. Every time the Iranian people have an uprising I hope they can finally pull it off.
This is a social expectations thing rather than a legality thing, so not really.
Isn’t it a legal thing in Iran?
A religious state is a funny thing. There’s a pretty fuzzy line between legality and cultural taboos. I mean, the place has a president and a supreme religious leader. A religious mandate is almost the same as a law in these kinds of conditions, but like with everything, everywhere, Iran is a big place and I’m sure it varies a lot by region and neighborhood.
It comes down to the mullahs who walk around enforcing rules arbitrarily like beard and pubic hair length.
Pubic hair length? Are you joking?
According to the article technically women can’t get motorcycle licenses in Iran, but according to the woman in the article she hasn’t been harassed due to that, so I’m not sure how it works in practice.
USA is still getting blonder.
Will that make America not bomb them or…? 🤔 Good for them though, I could never cause bikes scare me!
American bomb technology uses oil seeking tips
They don’t need the Americans or Israelis to destroy their country. They’re very good at doing that themselves.
For a country battered by sanctions Iran is actually doing pretty well for itself, so I’m not sure what you’re talking about.
If the only metric is money, sure. Iranian women aren’t exactly happy though
Even assuming that’s true*, that’s not the same as “destroying their country.”
*I’m not sure how much Iranian gender laws affect women’s daily life there.
Extremely. My ex partner had to spend her first 20 years in that godforsaken country. She told me after 4 years of living outside of Iran that in case she has to move back, she’d rather off herself.
Every Iranian Woman I’ve met over the years echoed similar experiences: Making sure the veil sits correctly, lest you get beaten; knowing, that your voice in court is just half that of a man; knowing that your husband can prevent you from working at any time. Every time you interact with the state, you get reminded that you are a second class citizen.
Within the last few years they had such significant protests in response to a woman who died in police custody that they had to pardon 20k people imprisoned in relation to them and 80k people facing charges. Then they strengthened the laws around the cause for the arrest. That’s not what a functional country does when its people are unhappy.
Authoritarianism ≠ “destroying their country.” That’s exactly what an authoritarian state does when its people are unhappy.
Okay, I’m starting from the position of: authoritarian countries are not functional countries.
When your authoritarianism leads to a massive brain drain, you destroy your country.
They’re destroying their own water supply because of mismanagement and corruption. Last time i checked, living without water is kind of hard.
Yeah that’s a fair point. Seems climate change has a lot to do with it though, so this is more of a joint venture.

Yes. Unless they’re lgbtq on ebikes.
Better for the environment than a car lemme tell you
Not really, those scooters pollute badly.
Maybe they should just get a golf cart but like bottomless so they can run on the ground like the Flintstones
