I know this is really serious but the title makes it sound like they’re some kind of invading alien army approaching from the ocean, and every day they draw closer

Did RFK cough it out? Or does it spread anally? That way tRump would already have it!

However, in the 1950s, eradication efforts using sterile male flies and livestock monitoring began to push the fly population southward.

    Then…

“It nearly wiped out our cattle industry before; we need to act forcefully now. That’s why I insist we start using pesticide bait immediately.”

Is there a reason we wouldn’t use sterile male flies before it even gets here? Or, you know, just keep them in international circulation?

Edit: Honest question, not snarky. I’m ignorant here.

Wiping out cattle industry would have an absolutely gigantic & immediate effect on lowering greenhouse gas emissions & with that the catastrophic climate changes.

Grain of salt, but I’m pretty sure I saw this exact “wasteful science,” or at least this type of it, under attack by this administration/the DOGE machete, so that’d be why. Inability to think/connect dots and adamant anti science dogma.

Nah truth be told the factories that produce the sterile screwworms, in Panama and Mexico, didn’t have the capacity to breed enough sterile screwworms. They were producing like 1m/month and they actually needed 3m/month to stay ahead of it, something like that. Now production is ramping up but the invasion has been faster.

The science includes gender (“male flies”), I could absolutely see the program getting cut just for that.

Wouldn’t even have to be that. It’s just the type of thing they love to target like the studying shrimp on a treadmill John Oliver recently exposed they love to trot out. The more ridiculous they can make it sound in a one liner, the worse they can paint it as government waste and stupid science.

It’s so great to be at the end of human cooperation and civilization. I’m so excited for when antibiotics stop working because of factory farming. /s

      Stop spreading panic.

While NWS can infect humans—and those cases are grisly—it is relatively rare.

The US has halted imports of cattle, bison, and horses from Mexico to try to keep the parasite out. Officials have also set up nearly 8,000 traps across Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico. Among 13,000 screening samples, so far, none have turned up NWS.

Maybe he meant end of cooperation because in times past, we would have unified against this threat and kept it at bay, but now we’re all fucked and everything is on fire so nobody has time to deal with the situation?

You do realize the “/s” denotes they are being sarcastic.

Look for draining or enlarging wounds, as well as signs of discomfort. Also look for screwworm larvae (maggots) and eggs in or around body openings, such as the nose, ears, and genitalia, or the navel of newborn animals.

While NWS can infect humans—and those cases are grisly—it is relatively rare.
