It’s the military structure he likes. Everyone wears a uniform, everyone puts the uniform before themselves. It’s all yes sir, no sir, Klingons decloaking off starboard sir. There is a clear structure of authority and everyone follows it without question. That is the part of Star Trek Stephen Miller likes. He’s so blinded by the set and setting that he doesn’t see the message at all. As far as he’s concerned it’s a space show about subordinates following their Capitan. Nothing more.

The ancient Greeks had a good idea with Ostracism.

No need for a trial, or even an accusation of a crime. Just the population saying “this person is shitty and shouldn’t be in the city/country” and they were kicked out for 10 years.

That miller guy is scum and wants people to suffer, must have been abused and high ACE scores, so he wants revenge and to hurt others, to punch down as the gop, supernatural, military, and other controlling and dualistic groups work and indoctrinate. Trauma bonding is so damaging and unhealthy, yet it’s treated as good and normal. Signs of a sick society that needs the truth. They let the ego and pain body control them and the result is senseless suffering. Many abused do not behave this way so there is hope.

I would expect that the Democrats are going to be holding quite a few Congressional investigations in the next two years and that he is going to have to be answering quite a few questions in front of Congress for them.

Nah, Democrats are going to be out for blood. They know their based elected them to go after the Trump administration, and investigations are the main lever of power that they have if they have Congress but not the presidency. Where they’re going to run into problems getting to someone like Miller is executive privilege. Anyone vaguely close to the president is going to claim executive privilege, it goes to the courts, and then the Trump administration just tries to run out the clock.

History says no, they won’t. This is the same gaping wound from the civil war - the problem with the country has never been fixed. And that is that a lot of people in the country think they’re more worthy than other to be classified as human.

I expect a huge puffy-chested bluster about holding people accountable - then hemming and hawing until “We have to move forward” starts up, once the checks roll in.

Bribery is legal here, and they (mostly) seem to be bought. Use the outrage to get into power, then further entrench themselves in our broken system until they can cash-out, like the parasites they are.

I would very much like to be wrong.

Miller is too obvious. He smells Nazi from a mile away. Not dangerous to anybody with a modicum of common sense.

The real danger is that slick slimeball JD Vance. The only saving grace with him is that he has the charisma of an open hemorrhoid.

If anyone had told me in the 90’s that I would end up deeply admiring Westley Crusher and considering him one of my heroes, I would never have believed it.

In fairness, it’s not new. Wil Wheaton has always been awesome. But this confirms his awesomeness.

The hate for Wil Wheaton has never been warranted. He was a child. He had nothing to do with the writing of his character (wish fulfilment Mary Sue / Marty Stu type of character for Gene Roddenberry).

I’ve been a fan of Wil since before I started watching Star Trek TNG as a kid, when I saw him in Stand By Me. Later in life I learned that he was a nerd, and was “one of us” much more than the other Trek actors. There’s really so much to love about the guy that at this point if you hate him it’s on you, not him.

His character’s a bit annoying in like the first two episodes he’s in, once the writers find their footing he’s fine. He’s not the only character that took a few eps to make sense.

Same. He played a nerdy kid that spent more time interacting with the adults around him than other kids, even if they didn’t always take him seriously. I identified with that a lot. And it never hurt that Wil is only a year or so older than me in real life, and had a lot of the same interests. I grew up seeing him as both a peer and a role-model.

I’m in the early-ish stages of a full Star Trek rewatch (or watch for the first time, for a couple of series). Apropos, I was on the penultimate episode of TAS when news about Stewart broke. Finished TAS, watched The Inner Light, then started TNG.

I guess what I’ll say about the “hate” for Wesley is that we– the audience– were told to hate Wesley, at least in the first part of season one. Picard had active disdain for him, and the entire crew simply called him “the boy.” Roddenberry was like George Lucas in my opinion; the best there was at the big ideas, woefully bad ad the small ones. Individual episode writing and character development being “small” in this context.

The early hate was just in the period where TNG was trying to figure itself out, and if you couldn’t relate to Wesley in some way, you hated him for his part. But it got better, and the show needed that age representative.

To be fair, the first season TNG is a little unsteady on its feet. For instance, Picard was depicted as being a lot more stubborn and rigid in his ways but ended up with a lot more nuance after a little bit.

I didn’t like or dislike the character. I just found the Westley Crusher side arcs of zero interest and basically time wasters.

As in, I watched Star Trek to watch, ya know, star treks - space stuff, aliens, adventure at the frontier of the know universe and crazy science fiction. I didn’t watch Star Trek to watch a teenager come of age: I already had one at home.

I grew up on the original Star Trek. It probably shaped my expectations.

I found him annoying in the first 1-2 seasons of TNG but that wasn’t helped by him being classed as a bit of a nuisance. Not helped by Picard not knowing how to deal with him either. Picard was probably better with the younger kids than an adolescent. And as a 10yo with a father the same age as Picard (or at least Patrick Stewart), the similarities between their “styles” felt like a reflection on my life at the time.

The fact I didn’t like Wesley probably means I didn’t really like myself either thinking about it but that’s a problem for me and my therapist, Dr. Shiraz.

Fair, I wasn’t really into the alien dignitary on an diplomatic mission to talk about shit the entire episode. I also loved the high concept sci-fi stuff. But I didn’t think blaming the actor for episodes that aren’t the best was the way to go about it.

Oh yeah clearly. I didn’t care much for Westley Crusher, but I had nothing against Wil Wheaton. In fact, I knew nothing about him until he became an adult and I realized he had interesting shit to say.

But clearly he’s not responsible for Westley Crusher anymore than Jon Paul Steuer was responsible for the equally-annoying Alexander Rozhenko character.

Probably the first time I really understood a little bit of the hate was when I watched Galaxy Quest and their parody of him was a little child. It’s just a little bit out-of-odds with the setting that there’s this goofy kid there all the time.
