It snowed pretty hard once in Alabama, and the roads got icy so they cancelled work. Management told us that we would all have to use a day of PTO for this unplanned vacation. I told my boss “Fuck that, I’ll walk to work. You’re not getting my PTO.” and he said “You can’t do that, the building’s locked.”

I was prepared to become an Issue, but the next day they must have realized how illegal that paper trail was because they retracted the PTO thing.

A similar, much more severe storm happened a few years later, and I told my boss that I was absolutely not driving to work in my little sedan. He told me he would come pick me up and that I was a big baby, then shows up sliding around in his Prius with no chains or anything. After barely making it in, no one else was at the office and everything was dark. He made me work the full shift anyway before letting me go home, and HR said they wouldn’t give me any consideration for working a day more than everyone else.

I work outside, I literally have snow days. Can’t do my masonry job from home.

It really is. Some adults do get actual snow days though in jobs you can’t do under the conditions.

During the remote work era it was a bit of a bummer that there were no more snow days

Now that we’re in the return to office era, does that mean we get snow days again? Fuck no, you can work from home those days (but only those days)

I fondly remember the Beast from the East blizzard in Ireland early 2018. Got a whole paid week off work because the entire country was basically in lockdown since Ireland isn’t used to that sort of weather condition. Cozied up at home, and one day I put on my winter gear and walked from Dublin to Howth and back. I was the only person outdoors. No cars, no busses, no trains, no pedestrians. It felt like 28 Days Later, just without the Zombie apocalypse. ^^

Their have been power outages that have effected my work. The excitement of getting to go home being crushed by a generator kicking on is terrible.

yeah, we’ve had power and internet issues shut down the shop a handful of times

cancelling a meeting is meh, there’s often at least one more scheduled at the same time or one immediately following it. it’s hardly an afternoon off

I have an academic job where I can sometimes skip work (usually when I get mildly sick, so I don’t spread it to colleagues) and I get exactly the same weird feeling of “being at home and missing out” as when I got a doctors note to skip school and stay home.
