I met someone once who had “invested” in these. Like, thousands of pounds. He thought he was super clever, talked down to us because we were so far out of the loop. I do wonder what happened to him. Poor guy.

They were held in a poorly designed browser-based crypto wallet that only weirdos know how to use, so when normies wanted in on the get rich quick scheme, they would easily get confused and authorize third parties full access to the wallet.

Can they just get in their little fucking bunkers already, and we can seal them off? Not many guillotines required, the stupid fucks can corner themselves and rot… much easier

zuck did immeasurable harm to vr by trying to dominate the field. utter decimation of expectations. he made a fool out of all of it.

i like what i’ve seen about the steam frame so far and look forward to having one hopefully. never, not once, not ever, shall i pressure anyone else into it; it’s a personal interest, personal to ME and others who choose to adopt it.

Gee, it’s almost like pressuring people into something makes it super not enjoyable for anyone. Anywho, I’m off to Google something only to scroll past the AI generated response I didn’t ask for and can’t disable.

I partially disagree. It got standalone VR much more popular. I dislike all the Facebook stuff but as far as the headset goes, it is genuinely decent. Like I personally use a Lenovo explorer so it’s about as cheap as it gets. But there are times I wish I got a quest because I could get away with wireless streaming from my PC.

It is a good compromise from all angles but I’m betting Facebook/meta is subsidizing the shit out of it.

The moment it was clear they couldn’t figure out what the “Next Big Thing” was they started throwing shit at the wall before going “well if we can’t find the next best thing, we’ll force it on them!”

That’s how we got to where we are with AI.

Oh boy don’t start me on cr’apps. It’s insane how even working at a grocery store requires an andriod or ios. It would be one thing if they provided you a phone or whatever like they did when I worked in JcPenis. I can’t wait to get a holiday job and then ask how do I install that on my linux phone.

Ageing a really funny experience. As a young person being left behind like that was unthinkable. I’d do anything to not get left behind. Now that I am a lot older I couldn’t care less if I get left behind. I’ve found what makes me happy, I don’t need to keep up anymore. It’s so freeing.

FOMO comes along a lot when you’re younger.

Then you MO a lot, for various reasons, and you realize it’s not a big deal.

If you don’t MO, then you never develop the FO, and then next thing you know, you’re in a FAFO loop.

VR is cool and the new meta glasses that are basically a vr headset in a glasses form factor is the direction that will make it far better. Too bad it’s all ruined because it’s a meta product and they insist you have an account for what is undoubtedly the most aggressive data collection in the entire world

Even if every developer has a max subscription and uses it to mostly or completely automate their coding activities…how many people is that? A few hundred thousand? Where are these supposed revenues going to come from?

Hah, and then nobody will buy it. They tried to up token prices earlier this year and were forced to go back to selling $10000 of compute for $100 in like a month because usage dropped off.

Not arguing your point, but a few hundred thousand…?

If you’re going to be making an argument, at least get the most basic of your facts right.

Globally there are about 40-50 million software engineers. A hell of a lot more than a few hundred thousand. 1/10th of that is in the U.S.

I was guessing, sure, but apparently so were you:

        https://www.jetbrains.com/lp/devecosystem-data-playground/

Even if the numbers are what you’re saying they are…and the same number of full-time developers transition to become full-time prompters (doubtful), and every one of them buys a $100 a month subscription that’s only 60 some odd billion a year. They’re projecting revenues to grow into the trillions per year. Literally how?

It’s painfully obvious to me as a (reluctant) daily user of these things that most people will have no use for it.

Maybe there are some people for whom the barrier to entry for software development was that they didn’t want to learn a programming language but were otherwise very technical and wanted to create software, but that seems like it’s a small amount of people.

Aside from the coding itself, developing software with Claude has all of the same problems developing software without it had.

There are also new risks to developing software with it, because among other things it further siloes developers (into teams of one + chatbot).

I’m also a reluctant user as well. I just got my degree and wanted to change careers. Am now like should I put experience with claude code in my resume or not lol. Its a weird time. Id rather do everything by hand but boss wants things fast.

I don’t think people have figured out yet that the coding was not the hard part of most software development. Maybe it is when you’re really junior or unimaginative, but it it’s more about communication issues, building the “right thing”, testing, etc. etc. forever and Claude hasn’t solved much or any of that (and has made some of it worse).

it was kinda cool around the same time OG WoW launched and up until late 2000s. After that it fell by a wayside because it was basically a bunch of chatrooms disguised as MMO. The only thing really worth checking out is the Chris Marker’s space - there’s a Youtube presentation about it
