Where is lawbreaking not just visible, but designed to be seen? Where is antisocial behaviour worn as a badge of honour? Where is pleasure gained directly from causing distress? And where is reckless endangerment often ignored by the police or treated with the mildest of punishments? The answer is on the roads.
I understand the academic roots and I’m sure the paper it was coined in is top tier sociology. But we have got to stop labeling bad shit as masculine, it only amplifies the behavior. The dude 6" off your bumper is not going to hear “petro-masculinity” and have a quiet contemplative moment about carbon emissions and road safety. He’s going to feel scolded, hear that you’re triggered and frightened of his masculinity, and then he’s going to start driving even more aggressively out of spite. And nobody will stop him, because nobody with the power to do so cares. Hell, the cops themselves are often the ones who drive like this.
Is there any action that won’t trigger spite from this type of person? Their entire existence consists of playing the victim and throwing tantrums because somebody advocated for something different to what they are used to.
This thread got me thinking. I think OP is correct that we need to stop doing the masculinity thing. If its a behavior change we are hoping for a better way to cause self reflection might be to use some of the noble features of what they think masculinity is. Does a protector drive like that and endanger everyone? Other peoples families / kids are also on the road. Would someone trust you to drive their loved ones around? Dont you want to be the guy everyone can count on to do the right thing and get us back safe?
Hey man I saw you pull into the lot the other day. I was surprised cause don’t act like you would drive that way. Make them question how they are being perceived. A little manipulative but fuck it.
Nah, this doesn’t work. I tried to gently tell a guy at the gas station one time, in one of those huge lifted pickups, that he had his brights on (as a hint that his headlights were too fucking bright) and he freaked out on me, screaming, threatening, etc.
Gently doesn’t work and you were a stranger. These messages need to come from friends or acquaintances / coworkers / clients. The message needs to be delivered assertively while leaving them a small out to protect their ego.
They won’t change in front of you, they need to process that on their own. Don’t rub their face in it if they change.
They won’t change
shoulda stopped there. these idiots have made their entire culture about this trash and it’s killing us all.
edit: I love how many car-thusiast dickheads are in #fuckcars
Listen dude I dont disagree largely, but people can and do change all the time. My posts are solution focused should you want to try something to the chuds in your life, be safe.
people can and do change all the time
pfft. people die. that’s about it. look at how many carthusiast dickheads are in this thread defending cars.
we’re going to die because they love their zoom zooms more than they can comprehend it’s killing the fucking thing that lets them breath and makes their food. And you’re defending them bwhahaha. don’t rub it in their face - why?
THEY RUB IT INTO OUR LUNGS EVERY FUCKING DAY, HOW THICK DO YOU HAVE TO BE TO IGNORE THAT?
I understand the academic roots and I’m sure the paper it was coined in is top tier sociology.
Which paper? All I’m seeing is an opinion piece. I’m confused by you linking this to sociology research
https://autonomy.work/portfolio/petro-masculinity-climate-refusal/
I didn’t pay for access but the abstract seems pretty solid, and the blog post I linked (by the same author) lays out a pretty convincing line between 20th century white american masculinity and support for fossil fuels even in the face of their economic obsolescence.
It’s great work, I just question the wisdom of using academic terminology in op-eds. Like obviously the fascist is going to throw stones but why oh why would you willingly hand them a bigger rock
He’s going to feel scolded, hear that you’re triggered and frightened of his masculinity,
oh poor fuckin baby, he’s gonna feel scolded because he’s being CALLED OUT ON HIS SHIT BEHAVIOR
Is the important thing to correct the behavior or to score points?
I don’t give a fuck about points, people need to see that this behavior is unacceptable.
they’re shitting into your lungs, your children’s future, you should be outraged. their petulant garbage is poisoning the entire fucking planet, cooking us where we live, the fact that you’re not incensed is an indicator of how easy they’ve had it. every vroom takes food off your kids plate, every belch of smog adds to the asthma and copd.
how can you have any idea of the damage and NOT be angry? are you that much of a chickenshit that you’ll watch a bunch of utter morons destroy the ONLY KNOWN, ACCESSIBLE, LIVABLE ECOSYSTEM IN THE ENTIRE FUCKING UNIVERSE, and won’t even get a bit cranky because ‘oh it’s to score points’
fuck points, I want my kids to live in a world that’s not an ecological hellscape.
I am very angry, I’m just also trying to stay measured here.
We need that chucklefuck in the f-350 to play ball. His feelings are important because his reactions are important. Telling him how bad and dumb he is and tying it to his identity as a man is counterproductive because all that shit just makes him double down.
LOLOLOL
you’re never going to convince them with kindness. dude, wake the fuck up - if they cared at all, they wouldn’t be these people.
you’re gonna waste the remainder of your life trying to be kind while the world chokes on their effluence.
Petro masculinity 😂.
It’s like they want people to make fun of them.
Woke 1 cringe must go
My mom drives like this, don’t be sexist about a non gendered issue. Ah just realized it’s from the opinion article title.
yes, I’m sure there are a couple of dozen examples to the contrary… nationwide.
overwhelmingly the aggressive drivers and motorheads whose entire personality is VROOM VROOM are male.
You know this, I know this, you see it every day, but sure, throw your mom under the bus… Cute
My dad is the safe driver so it’s weird
good for you. you know that’s a vanishingly small counter example to the overwhelmingly male crowd represented by the motorheads.
ah, the ‘but aktchually’ crowd
edit: lol but aktchually look at all the angry downvotes what a bucket o chuds
My wife is also the crazy driver tho when she’s on her women cycle and something triggers her anxiety(almost anything). Even my father in law complemented my driving and told her to learn from me.
there it is…
I knew it was coming and here we go… women cycle… holy shit
Oh want me to just call her crazy at driving at random times? fuck off
Driving
that’s too fast, too dangerous and utterly lawless: why do we tolerate this petro-masculinity?Hey now, I drive my nerdy EV 10 below in the far right lane.

culture war? class war? as far as I can tell it’s a battle between the rich and stupid who want to pollute and don’t give a shit for future generations, and the rest of the species who just want to fucking live.
I’m reminded of the anti-union poster suggesting not paying union dues, rather buying a game console instead.
After the 2024 election it appears that Americans genuinely cannot think further than their own impulses.

valid.
After the 2024 election it appears that Americans genuinely cannot think further than their own impulses.
depressingly accurate.
I just don’t see it as upper class vs lower class, as much as polluter enthusiast class vs. the rest of us who like breathing
the rich also want to polute, not just the stupid
so make it into a class war the rich can manipulate with ‘they’re gonna take your vroom vroom’ and see how far you get.
ah the polluter class has spoken
i see people switching lanes suddenly without warning is more dangerous.
Because we think it kills more of them than it actually kills the rest of us?
Sadly, it does not. Also think about all the non-fatal but life changing injuries they cause.
This sounds very whiny. Why don’t you get your local council to build some speed bumps. No one is going to speed up over them. And the idiots will then go on to get killed on the empty country roads.
You’re right, sending them my orders now. Local council have to do everything I tell them, right?
People racing around you at night sounds like a problem of everyone. If enough people are affected then the council will surely listen
And writing articles about a problem is not a valid way of getting more people to support your cause and convincing politicians to address them? How are people supposed to get their councils to do something without complaining about it?
Framing it like an issue of masculinity surely does not help
Yes, this completely different point you’re making now is better then the first point you’ve made.
Better to just install them yourself.
Men have risk-taking burned into their DNA thanks to hundreds of thousands of years of primate evolution. This is not anything that can be switched off.
And It will come out whether society wants it to or not.
What truly matters is if there is a venue in which such risk-taking can freely exist, equally as unrestrained and chaotic, without impacting wider society. Because if that venue doesn’t exist… any venue immediately available will be violently cracked open regardless of what anyone wants.
It all comes down to supply and demand. If the demand is there, supply will be generated regardless of the punishments in place to discourage it. And frequently in spite of punishments, as successful evasion becomes an integral part of the risk-taking as well.
You cannot smother basic human nature. That has never worked at any time in human history. All you can do is divert it and insulate the rest of society from it.
the bioessensialist likes to thing their dumbassery is merely a design of nature rather than a conscious decision to be defeatist and interpret everything in self-serving ways

That’s like saying “evolution isn’t real”.
Actually, no. That is saying exactly that.
So you’re a flat-earther of the young-earth-creationist variety. Cool beans.
