  • Yeah but thats not the total cost is it ?They kill 30 a day from transport pollution, vehicular homicide is thousands a year, several more thousand are hospitalised. They health coat alone are enormous and they get away with that for “free”, where as walking leads to lpwer heathcare costa, lower ,.lower raod debays, lower pollution death and better mental health outcomes.

If you own a car and cycle you’re not getting a reduction, so many cyclists have opportunity costs of insurance and rego for a vehicle they don’t use as much.

Car Infrastructure costs are more then rego and fuel excise, ao while they pay aomethig they are still subsidised…

Then we have the whole climate change thing, a tonne of emissions coats about $1200 to remove, that’s not costed in. The enviormental damge from urban sprawl enabaled by cars isnt costed in, whats the habitiat of a Quoll worth exactly ?

And 100 other costs car drivers dont pay, like tyre and brake dust destroying marine and riparian environments.

We should be paying people to cycle and making car travel near impossible outside of edge cases.

  • Fickin’ hell , you’re aweaome, just wanted to say that as an able bodied dude.

I’m in Aus. Until about 2 years ago we lived on the 10th floor of an apartment block, dude diagonally opposite us had lost use of his legs. He had a wheelchair that “docked”, into an electric mobility wheel thing that had a handebar with controls, battery driven. He’d use the wheel chair by itself to get around the complex, down the elevator to the indoor heated pool, had a electric lift he could use to lift himself from the chair into the seat then swing out into the pool and lower himself , float between his legs and do some laps. as wll as just get around the complex (5 towers, 13 floors on each) Then he could dock it into the electric front wheel thing and head across the road to the shopping centre to do groceries etc. Turned his manual wheel chair into a three wheel electric trike Not sure how far it could get him, I never asked but was also much faster then walking speed to get around.

I don’t think anyone wants 100% car free but an 80% reduction should be an attainable goal eg electric taxi to take you places and a better chair!

    Stay sane !

  • Throwing aside the current administration…

That’s not true, I noped out after they want pants on head insane after 9/11, you’re just seeing that amped up now. People just normalised it as they will this.

I spent quite a bit of time there and lived their briefly early this century but havent been back since.

There’s so much to see in the US.

Agreed but the worlds big place and lots to see

    It’s a roadtripper’s dream.

Or nightmare because you’re forced to use a car, train travel is laughable and walkabilty is ridiculous in most places.

But to be fair for environmental and carbon emission reasons I don’t fly anymore and try not to drive unless it’s essential.
