Where is lawbreaking not just visible, but designed to be seen? Where is antisocial behaviour worn as a badge of honour? Where is pleasure gained directly from causing distress? And where is reckless endangerment often ignored by the police or treated with the mildest of punishments? The answer is on the roads.

I understand the academic roots and I’m sure the paper it was coined in is top tier sociology. But we have got to stop labeling bad shit as masculine, it only amplifies the behavior. The dude 6" off your bumper is not going to hear “petro-masculinity” and have a quiet contemplative moment about carbon emissions and road safety. He’s going to feel scolded, hear that you’re triggered and frightened of his masculinity, and then he’s going to start driving even more aggressively out of spite. And nobody will stop him, because nobody with the power to do so cares. Hell, the cops themselves are often the ones who drive like this.

Is there any action that won’t trigger spite from this type of person? Their entire existence consists of playing the victim and throwing tantrums because somebody advocated for something different to what they are used to.

This thread got me thinking. I think OP is correct that we need to stop doing the masculinity thing. If its a behavior change we are hoping for a better way to cause self reflection might be to use some of the noble features of what they think masculinity is. Does a protector drive like that and endanger everyone? Other peoples families / kids are also on the road. Would someone trust you to drive their loved ones around? Dont you want to be the guy everyone can count on to do the right thing and get us back safe?

Hey man I saw you pull into the lot the other day. I was surprised cause don’t act like you would drive that way. Make them question how they are being perceived. A little manipulative but fuck it.

Nah, this doesn’t work. I tried to gently tell a guy at the gas station one time, in one of those huge lifted pickups, that he had his brights on (as a hint that his headlights were too fucking bright) and he freaked out on me, screaming, threatening, etc.

Gently doesn’t work and you were a stranger. These messages need to come from friends or acquaintances / coworkers / clients. The message needs to be delivered assertively while leaving them a small out to protect their ego.

They won’t change in front of you, they need to process that on their own. Don’t rub their face in it if they change.

we’re going to die because they love their zoom zooms more than they can comprehend it’s killing the fucking thing that lets them breath and makes their food. And you’re defending them bwhahaha. don’t rub it in their face - why?

THEY RUB IT INTO OUR LUNGS EVERY FUCKING DAY, HOW THICK DO YOU HAVE TO BE TO IGNORE THAT?

Do you want to be right or do you want things to improve? You don’t rub it in their face because its antagonizing and ultimately defeats the purpose of trying to help them see another way to act.

Also not defending cars you dumbass.

Also, do you eat meat? Animal ag contributes more to environmental decay than cars.

Which paper? All I’m seeing is an opinion piece. I’m confused by you linking this to sociology research

I don’t give a fuck about points, people need to see that this behavior is unacceptable.

they’re shitting into your lungs, your children’s future, you should be outraged. their petulant garbage is poisoning the entire fucking planet, cooking us where we live, the fact that you’re not incensed is an indicator of how easy they’ve had it. every vroom takes food off your kids plate, every belch of smog adds to the asthma and copd.

how can you have any idea of the damage and NOT be angry? are you that much of a chickenshit that you’ll watch a bunch of utter morons destroy the ONLY KNOWN, ACCESSIBLE, LIVABLE ECOSYSTEM IN THE ENTIRE FUCKING UNIVERSE, and won’t even get a bit cranky because ‘oh it’s to score points’

fuck points, I want my kids to live in a world that’s not an ecological hellscape.

I am very angry, I’m just also trying to stay measured here.

We need that chucklefuck in the f-350 to play ball. His feelings are important because his reactions are important. Telling him how bad and dumb he is and tying it to his identity as a man is counterproductive because all that shit just makes him double down.

you’re never going to convince them with kindness. dude, wake the fuck up - if they cared at all, they wouldn’t be these people.

you’re gonna waste the remainder of your life trying to be kind while the world chokes on their effluence.
