I am seeing AI generated images become increasingly prevalent in cases where imagery has a utility such as on posters, flyers etc. Some of it is created and distributed by large entities such as my school or a gym, whose size actually makes the imagery easier to fight.

When my school puts up AI generated posters, even if my emails to staff are ignored, I can take physical action and vandalise them with a message of hostility towards generative AI. In each instance I tried it, the poster was eventually taken down, but not before acting as a statement. The school is a school and doesnt really pursue legal action against students, and I believe the knowledge that the act was by a seemingly naïve student gives it more impact somehow. (Unfortunately, possibly as a result of my actions, the school has recently put up its AI imagery on a tv screen up high which I cannot do anything about.)

The gym is probably more serious about vandalism, but they are nice enough to request feedback from members. Hence I solve the problem diplomatically by asking nicely in a feedback form and appealing to their desire to make the gym better for members, including making them more comfortable.

A far more difficult problem is the growth of usage of AI imagery by individuals and small businesses for promotion purposes. Said usage has exploded recently. I am seeing several times more AI generated advertisements for manual labour by sidewalks than before and there is nothing I can do about it. The reason I hate it is that advertisement art, annoying as it used to be, was originally a way to connect, and now another pathway of human connection is being severed in favour of cheap eye candy. Generative AI is genuinely making me appreciate corporate art.

I think people just like doing stuff the easy way and the ease of telling a chatbot to make a visually pleasing image is growing faster than people’s appreciation for art and human connection.

Where is this going? Are people just going to let AI images flood everywhere that isnt vigilantly guarded by artists? Is there anything we can do about it?

I might be maddening over a symptom of a root issue. I might be taking this too seriously.

Edit: “vandalism” is actually too extreme a descriptor

We are about to go down the era of terrible overcrowded, crunchy ai design. And this is just school posters and flyers; Just wait until techbros start designing clothes , cars or houses with this shit.

I am far from an AI hater but the most disgusting thing I have seen are entire presentation slides generated by AI. AI slop relevant background image with AI slop information boxes with almost-passing AI slop text but the closer you look at the text the more gibberish it gets.

I would say be careful about your tactic of vandalism. Especially if it’s only you doing that but also in general. I think you are looking to close a barn door as the horse traverses the horizon.

Art, like water, will find a way to survive. Some streams will sadly dry up, new unexpected ones will spring up elsewhere. Illumination painters went out of style after the printing press. A lot of painting got taken over by photography and video. Etc.

In the meantime, in my view, the best way to protest is not to give money to the offenders and to tell them why you refuse to. But I’m also afraid that if you are quite rigid in your stance you’ll not be spending any money at all.

We are at the beginning of this supposed r-AI-volution. So far it costs several arms and legs and the results overall for the massive investment of limbs are rather unimpressive. I live in hope that economical restraints along with the anti-datacenter sentiment will course correct this quite a bit.

And every trend breeds counterculture. High usage of generated imagery will undoubtedly lead to a made by humans trend in a couple of years.

Thank you; I have noticed that for some reason I tend to adjust the extremity of my action to create balance in my environments, eg if no one is attacking something, in this case gen ai, I feel the need to ramp up my own aggression. I will try to control that.

To summarise, do you think we should encourage anti gen ai sentiment and wait for it to boil over and meanwhile just observe and dont beat ourselves up over it and let social forces do the work?

I encourage it to a point. I try to avoid it as much as I can. But it’s like you’re a vegetarian and sometimes there is only sausage on the menu. I like the idea of using established feedback channels to complain especially about slop. I will try to copy that.

Just wait for degenerative AI to collapse. It’s basically an enormous Ponzi scheme and, since no real “AGI” is ever going to come from the LLMbecile path, it is not a sustainable enterprise.

I’ve seen events and businesses using this obvious AI art and I just boycott them. I will not support the blaspheming of art.

most people dont care about artists, or seeing quality content. yes, they are just gonna let ai in their home. not sure what the perfect solution for it in the future, but currently i was able to not use it, or let it intrude in my personal life.

Ai art is the least important issue in my opinion and doesnt feel worth persuing. People who make Ai art fundamentally don’t understand what art is and they won’t be successful outside of being clip art due to that. Art is many things so its hard to umbrella this for every type of art overall, but I think only the hand made things will be massively sucessful “blockbusters”, or be the next giant indie game to sell 20 million copies, etc. Mean while more and more giants will get consumed by this virus that figures out the best way to monitize the enjoyment out of everything to the point it fails. Destroying the things you once loved with it. The virus will then move on to the art you currently enjoy and you will move on to the next untained medium.

The way I see it is the people who see art as art have an appreciation inte story of the creator, and the way they can express their lived experience through art. Its like when you read a book and a movie is playing in your mind with your imagination, your minds eye. When people make art it comes from that place people use to express themselves. To show you what they see in their eyes.

And then theres people that are so tallented at a craft that the talent itself becomes a form of art, as their skill expression. Like sewing extra fancy patterns in to seems of a dress takes a functional skill and turns it into art. Even something as stupid as those call of duty montages is an artistic form on skill expression. You add some air horns and overrates electronic dance music and you have distilled the imagination of a 14 year old boy who just discovered hormones. Its still art and expression and gives you a glimpse in a moment of time that doesnt exist today, and you can see that persons goals, and insecurities despite how trivial or dumb it is.

The people who see ai generated images as art have always seen art as “content”. To them they don’t understand its the expression of ones self, but simply a way to get money. And if money is not involved then it doesnt matter. Its a means to a end. Its the reason people use it for posters, or lawn mowing yard signs. They will never really see art as this vague confusing concept like we do. Its like trying to explain love to someone who only understands lust, they think you are talking about the same thing. Some peoples distilled life experience or perspective can sometimes prevent them from making a connection that your brain makes, and I don’t think it is something you can explain to someone.

You know sometimes you can only see someone’s perspective through art. When I went to an art gallary most of the experience was reading about the artist. One particular artist has really disturbing facial art work, and it turns out that person suffered from some mental health issue that warped his perspective of faces. His/her art was a window into how their mind works. You don’t get any of that from Ai. There is no context or meaning, its just an assembly of words/pixels that didn’t come from anywhere with intention. They can only distill styles but without meaning. A picture is worth a thousand words, but a ai generated image robs those thousands of words of context making them meaningless.

And going back to the skill topic. So much of art is just for the enjoyment of developing your own skill set and the routine of putting that into practice that is the enjoyment. The whole fun of making art is making art. That rare moment when you can’t stop working on, it feels like having a manic episode. The whole point is the journey not the destination. Its like having ceremonial matcha tea, it takes like 2-4 hours and has a million steps. In the end the tea taste like shit, but its about the ritual, the process.

i hate these shitty AI slops as much as any other people here, but i believe “taking physical action and vandalising them with a message of hostility towards generative AI” is not a good response to this. to the uninformed that just makes us look like weirdos hurting others when in fact it’s almost the exact opposite.

Well there is a decently large fraction of students who are annoyed by the images; they just are quiet about it. The extent of the vandalism was mainly just taping paper slips with messages such as “cut the slop” to the posters. It’s not too wild, so I hoped it would embolden others to resist this usage of gen ai.

that doesn’t seem like vandalising at all… was imagining stuff like spray painting or tearing them lol. i’d do similarly in such situation
