If he had a rifle instead, they wouldn’t have escalated to violence because that’s a visual deterrent. By the time they knew he was carrying a CCW they’d already escalated past the point they felt they could walk away. It’s not a visual deterrent to prevent conflict, it can only be used for deadly force during a conflict.
