Yeah I don’t understand this situation at all. One of my family members was speculating maybe Mamdani has some kind of blackmail or leverage over Trump. Maybe some property Trump still has in NYC? Either that or this is a rare instance where Trump realizes Mamdani is going to be good for NYC and that Trump’s businesses in NYC will in turn benefit from that. I don’t know, the whole thing is bizarre.

Copypasta of my comment from another thread: Trump has apparently just recently realized (as of the election results around the U.S.) that he’s hugely unpopular and that it threatens his power / his grip on the Republicans. And that it stems in part from how he has ignored the affordability issue ever since he got elected.

Then someone like Mamdani waltzes into the picture and absolutely cleans up when running on affordability… and not just “uh yeah I will totally lower the price of eggs” either. So Trump sees an opportunity to cozy up to this affordability guy in the hopes that some of the voter goodwill that Mamdani earned on that topic rubs off on Trump. He’s desperate not to lose his grip on power.

This is exactly it. Trump is a malignant narcissist and views people and policy only in terms of how it affects him. Mamdani was a useful foil to scare people with while he was running for mayor (“look at the Democrats pushing Socialism!”), but now that he spanked the field, Trump sees the potential to score points by riding his coattails.

Or Mamdani said something that was true but in a way that Trump took as a compliment because Trump thinks a lot of horrible things are positives.

It’s really not that complicated. There aren’t any secret moving pieces.

Trump is a classic narcissist. As long as you’re talking about him in a way that feels positive, he will like you and agree with most everything you have to say.

Furthermore, NYC is filled with entitled narcissists, and any Mayor will need to know how to deal with them to get elected and successfully manage the city. So Mamdani has had a lot of practice lately.

Yeah I don’t understand this situation at all.

It’s very simple, Trump core value is winning at all costs. He likes winners, and people who are popular.

Mamdani might be a Muslim but he does check off all other boxes:

      He is well liked

      Charismatic

      Well spoken

      Has a plan

People forget how much Trump liked Trudeau, inside he likes handsome, charismatic men.

Yeah I lean towards this. That and Trump is a gigantic pussy and the epitome of “keyboard warrior” just like his cultists. He buckles under the weight of any person who is socially and morally functional.
