https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reactance_(psychology)
In psychology, reactance is an unpleasant motivational reaction to offers, persons, rules, regulations, advice, recommendations, information, nudges, and messages that are perceived to threaten or eliminate specific behavioral freedoms. Reactance occurs when an individual feels that an agent is attempting to limit one’s choice of response and/or range of alternatives.
This hits me all the time.
same with disehes , i told them to get a dishwasher to save tons of time.
Neat, I didn’t know there was a word for it
There’s a reason i have this meme on speed dial…

Reactance is weird. When I was in school my parents telling me to study actually puts me off from studying. But now I am a working adult, I had to let being bossed around by peers from another team that I support so that I don’t get into trouble. Good thing I got a promotion so I don’t have to deal with them eejits.

Huh?
Yeah volunteering feels lots better than following direction
Use it for evil.
Say “You should just stay in bed all day.” to someone like this.
Won’t work if they realize you’re trying reverse psychology on them though
What if they know that I know that they think I am trying reverse psychology? Hmm?
Just paralyzes them into thinking what if you know they know you know they know you know they think you’re trying reverse psychology
Your coworkers who want a promotion pull this shit all the time. They’ll see you starting [task] because its literally your job. Your only job. “Hey could you just do [task] for me please?”.
Now you’ve got a choice, be petty and not do your only job, or accept that hes your boss now and do what he told you to do.
Yup. Have had a few coworkers exactly like that. Have tried to deal with them in various ways, but it’s always tricky. Especially if they are the “popular person” in the office.
Another variant is the jackass who walks in and sees others working on something, acts angry that they are “doing it all wrong” then huffs out without actually pitching in. Had a coworker who consistently did this BS to try to cover his own inadequacies and tardiness. Was so happy when the boss fired that fucker.
This comic is better when you read it Manga-style.
Who gave you this comic about ME in particular? (and yes, it’s the ADHD)
EDIT: Bro I was literally diagnosed when I was eight. It’s not a quirky thing, it’s something I genuinely have, do ya’ll need my fuckin Ritalin receipts or something?
Nobody said you don’t have ADHD. We said this has nothing to do with ADHD
Mds cara, relê meu comentário. Tava dizendo que nem tudo tem origem em TDAH, e desculpar idiossincrasias e comportamentos normais como tendo origem em TDAH é simplesmente errado.
Guarda teus recibos 🙄…
No, it isn’t the ADHD. Nowhere in this post is ADHD mentioned. Not everything is ADHD. In fact, this is a generalisable behaviour as described under the post itself by OP.
Americans have the strangest culture of excusing infantile ingrained behaviour as pathology.
Super interesting study, thanks for posting!
So glad someone else said it. People lumping normal behaviors into mental disorders and calling them personality traits is one of my biggest pet peeves of Lemmy.
I LITERALLY WAS DIAGNOSED WHEN I WAS EIGHT.
That doesn’t mean every normal feeling you develop is caused by your ADHD
I’m not American, and I was diagnosed when I was 8 years old… Like, sometimes people just HAVE that…
If you mean “Americans” as someone from the Americas, sure.
If you mean USians, the comment OP is not.
I’m blue dabadee dabadaa
Link’s broken! You should remove the space between

Edit: Nevermind, I guess for some reason even when you paste the normal link in, it displays it with a space on my instance for some reason.
it’s the 'tism
This is just human nature. Even neurotypical people tend to do this.
never said NTs don’t.
if you often find yourself not doing something because someone told you to do it though, chances are higher that you’re on the spectrum. that’s one of the reasons why ABA is a thing.
NTs do it too, just not as often and usually just shrug it off and do whatever they were going to do anyway.
