I’m planning to introduce Peertube to a fairly large group of people who are new to the fediverse. Which instance is the best in terms of how easy it is to get an account and watch federated content as well as having something to discover locally?
If you don’t have a lot of content to move over, and rarely post, I’m pretty happy on peertube.wtf, however there’s a 100GB limit and you can only upload 10GB a day. Meanwhile if you’re at active YTer with a lot of content, CuddlyTube also seems pretty good from a cursory glance and has no upload limits. Oh, and if you’re considering MakerTube, they’re paywalled now because of some shit going on at Hetzner., so let that be your warning for going with that instance, and spectra.video’s also considering paywalling for the same reason that MakerTube is paywalled.
You could also self-host if you have the hardware on hand or can afford the VPS to, and you have the admin skills to pull it off.

I do not agree you should put someone on the largest instance with the most reach. There’s a LOT of terrible shit out there. I personally set up a script that reaches out to certain servers I trust, gets their follows, and I follow them. I call it a chain of trust. I think Peertube is working towards implementing this as well.
But honestly, I think the best way, run your own. Or I’d be happy to help you set one up. That way you can have your community, you can pull things in from servers you want to federate with, etc. I honestly think small local communities that interconnect are the way to go. You control the content, you set your own rules, etc.

Running an instance is what I eventually want to do, but I don’t currently have good enough hardware for that.

I would send people to the instance with the largest federation and open registration, which appears to be https://video.4d2.org/, according to https://instances.joinpeertube.org/
Putting everybody on one server defeats the whole purpose of federation, and eventually ends up with a single server owned by a single entity, just like YouTube.
Tell people to find the server that most aligns with their interests, location and philosophy, that is fairly active.
I’m not putting them all on 1 server. That server only has 254 users. It’s just the one with the most videos available.
Servers have nothing to do with interests, location and philosophy. The one with the most users has 219k.
Guess depending on the type of talk or course OP does, choosing the instance could be a nice part of the lesson! Demonstrates nicely what the Fediverse is and how it operates. Also teaches them to get on board the next Fedi platform all by themselves, once they choose to.
You’d obviously still need to prepare that lesson, though and have some kind of knowledge about the instances.
