My parent is like this. Competent in some specific domains, but when you start to discuss politics or world news, suddenly it’s all “how can you know what’s real?”
They have a complete binary understanding of reality. Media literacy requires gathering lots of different perspectives on an event and filtering them through an understanding of each reporter’s bias, and all they can manage is true/not true. anything beyond that sends them into a Gish gallop fear spiral
Things never go beyond curiosity for these people because theyre not interested in the details or facts
