According to Harvard research, eating oranges stimulates growth of Faecalibacterium prausnitzia.

This bacteria lives inside the human gut and generates serotonin and dopamine — 2 powerful molecules that elevate your mood.

Harvard is one of the top 5 research universities in the world. Gary Ruvkun won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Medicine. Where does he work ? Harvard.

I don’t need the serotonin and dopamine inside my gut, I need it in my brain. …Will shoving an orange up my nose work?

YSK is such a pale imitation of TIL. Please disagree, I’ve been baiting all fucking night and you all are way too chill. There is zero lively conversations on Lemmy. “but we don’t have bots” the fuck you don’t, in the mornings I see bots constantly importing reddit threads. I feel like I’m on fucking 1998 usenet. DEBATE ME!

Because if you’re sad now, but you want to be happy - you should probably eat an orange. It’s a nice thing to know

Yeah I know, but its not in the body of the post per Rule 2. Plenty of really bad YSKs that didnt belong here had the same thing and I called some of them out too. So in order to be fair I have to ask it here too, thats all.

Thats whats known as anecdotal evidence

Ive never met anyone with ebola yet WHO just declared a global emergency

Apparently, most people getting scurvy these days are autistic and have strong food selection preferences so they just dont end up eating anything with vitamin c

Oranges and other citrus fruit are also significantly acidic, which is hard on teef. So try not to go overboard, or at least rinse your mouth with water afterwards if you eat citrus regularly.

By the same token, do not rinse your mouth with water after brushing your teeth. This gives more of the toothpaste’s fluoride a chance to adhere, from my understanding.

Oh yeah emotions are just nutritional signals and gut-bacteria signals, I guess we’re all just making up reasons to be ABNORMAL AND DIFFICULT.

Orange juice also has some magnesium in it which can slightly help with pain and such.

I drink it when I get a migraine and always thought it was the sugar too till I found that out.

          😋

True, but here (Denmark) it is literally illegal to sell anything but pure fruit juice as juice, if it is made from concentrate it has to be labelled clearly, and it is only allowed to ad the amount of water that was removed.

If it has added sugar it is called Nektar.

If it has artificial flavors it is called Saft. Saft can also have added sugar. Saft also means Juice, English does not AFAIK have the words to distinguish between pure juice and flavored and sweetened juice.

IDK the rules in other EU countries, but my guess is that they are similar, but localized depending on language.

At least for me, all citrus fruits including their juices have an effect that they make me somewhat happier and help somewhat against depression. In the winter, I usually eat several mandarins a day.

If the bacteria can get what they need from it, i imagine the less processed it is the better.

I mean, this research wouldn’t be able to tell what about oranges makes these bacteria thrive, so would need a separate study for dried oranges or similar variations.

Having said that, your tea likely has so little actual orange in it, that it’s very likely negligible either way.
There’s probably just a tiny bit of orange in each tea bag to begin with, and it might even just be orange peel. And then it’s just traces of that which go into your tea water, too.

Of course, drinking tea in general can probably also help with depression in some way. At the very least, it hydrates you and presumably improves blood circulation, which can help get you out of a rut.
