It’s a combination of low self-esteem, low IQ, and insecurity. This makes the in-group smaller and “purer” but also pulls centrists / non-principled people toward the ideology of the in-group. That’s why Harris was the Democratic candidate in 2024, whereas 30 years ago Harris’ platform could have been a Republican one (and conversely why Sarah Palin seems tame by today’s standards, but not the standards of 30 years ago).
