He unleashed hell by ‘unconditional’ support. All he had to do was to be nuanced and ask for a proportional response following the Geneva convention. And we’re still not talking about the long term effect this will have for his own country. And he was doing so well…

Lol sure. The american military industrial complex will just throw away potential and active profits for the benefit of the world.

It’ll erode when it loses value, which will either be if Israel magically collapses, or if they run out of money to pay for arms.

God these people are so out of touch with reality. Israel had it all, even support from millions of moderate muslims over the world. They lost it after what, day 3? We’re almost a month in and these assholes act if the world was supporting them all the time. Talk about forming the narrative. They’re so stupid they threw millions online for ads to support them and still lost public approval.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

President Joe Biden and his top advisers are warning Israel with growing force that it will become increasingly difficult for it to pursue its military goals in Gaza as global outcry intensifies about the scale of humanitarian suffering there.

Behind the scenes, American officials also believe there is limited time for Israel to try to accomplish its stated objective of taking out Hamas in its current operation before uproar over the humanitarian suffering and civilian casualties – and calls for a ceasefire – reaches a tipping point.

In fact, there is recognition within the administration that that moment may arrive quickly: Some of the president’s close advisers believe that there are only weeks, not months, until rebuffing the pressure on the US government to publicly call for a ceasefire becomes untenable, sources told CNN.

Particularly jarring to Biden and his national security team, two sources familiar with the matter said, were Israeli airstrikes this week that targeted a refugee camp in northern Gaza, resulting in grim scenes of widespread destruction and deaths.

Biden has told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the relentless images of Palestinian women and children being pulled from rubble could start to narrow Israel’s ability to move forward with its current operation, according to senior administration officials.

And that isn’t just limited to IDF’s operation in Gaza: In a call with Netanyahu on Sunday, Biden told the prime minister he was concerned about the surge in violence against Palestinians by Israeli settlers in the West Bank and was emphatic that that the attacks had to stop, according to a source briefed on the conversation.

Urban warfare against an entrenched enemy is a slow process. For example, recently it took Russia three months to completely capture Mariupol despite a willingness to inflict civilian casualties and disregard international opinion. Israel is much more constrained in both ways. I hope they have a plan for reaching their objectives quickly enough - a premature ceasefire would mean many people dead but very little accomplished.

Israeli leaders understand that, but they had to take internal politics into account as well. “We’re not going to invade Gaza because we want to avoid international condemnation” would not have been acceptable to the majority of the people even if it were a good idea. I’m worried that this might have pushed them towards a course of action that they won’t be able to complete successfully.

(I also wonder if in a perverse way, pressure to finish the war quickly actually leads to more civilian casualties. People’s emotions don’t process numbers very well, so a shorter but bloodier war may hurt Israel’s international relations less than a longer but less bloody one. This incentivizes acting quickly rather than taking the time to wait for better circumstances.)

Israel has killed roughly as many civilians in the last month as were killed in Ukraine throughout the entire conflict. It’s preposterous to say Israel is more restrained in causing civilian casualties.

The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights puts the number at 9,701 confirmed, though they do admittedly believe the true number is likely to be much higher. The Prosecutor General of Ukraine puts the confirmed number at 10,749, though they also think the real number is higher.

Regardless of whether a single month of Israel’s war is roughly equal or only a third of the total casualties for a 21-month long invasion, once you started arguing that ~10,000 dead in a month is “restrained” you really should have considered how you got to that point.

It’s a relative valuation; restraint means the numbers could have been much higher, but aren’t. There are a lot of tactics Israel is capable of using and didn’t. They notify people before strikes. They demarcate which zones need to be evacuated. They are attacking military targets and not civilians. Restraint.

They “demarcated” all of northern Gaza. And then they bombed the south too. There are no warnings happening. And their “military” targets claim is trash. They didn’t know the invasion was happening and clearly don’t know where Hamas are. They’ve been destroying single homes of journalists, blowing up ambulances evacuating patients from hospitals they’re also threatening to bomb. There’s no reason at all to trust Israel when they claim every single building they destroy was housing Hamas.

That they haven’t simply razed every square inch of Gaza to the ground (or fucking nuked it like one minister suggested) doesn’t make it “restrained”.

So you’re here to criticize me for debating this stuff online too much… by baiting me into debating it more online. K.

            • Apartheid: 20% of Israeli citizens are Arab with full rights and aren’t kept legally separated, (what apartheid literally means.) Weird apartheid. Maybe Israel’s behaviors are in fact motivated by safety and not ethnic or religious discrimination, and they just happen to be under attack by a homogeneous group.

            • Crimes against humanity: plenty of those to go around in this conflict, I don’t see collateral damage when attacking valid military targets as a crime against humanity, I don’t believe it is illegal under international law, nor do I see not supplying an actively belligerent enemy with resources to be a crime against humanity, I find it absurd when others suggest that Israel should have to provide supply lines for its aggressor, I can’t speak for others.

Are you just gonna follow me around and repeat the concern troll buzzwords: It’s genocide! It’s apartheid! It’s crimes against humanity! You ought to be ashamed! Think of the children! Or, do you want to get into the merits of these accusations? Even better, suggest a better viable option than Israel’s response that doesn’t cost them dearly in Israeli lives, because I still haven’t heard one.

Maybe educate yourself on apartheid. It does not mean keeping groups separated, it means governmental action to systematically privilege a group of people. Human Rights Watch declared Israel an apartheid state in 2021 and issues a detailed report.

International criminal law, including the 1973 International Convention on the Suppression and Punishment of the Crime of Apartheid and the 1998 Rome Statute to the International Criminal Court, define apartheid as a crime against humanity consisting of three primary elements: (1) an intent by one racial group to dominate another; (2) systematic oppression by the dominant group over the marginalized group; and (3) particularly grave abuses known as inhumane acts.

Racial group is understood today also to encompass treatment on the basis of descent and national or ethnic origin. International criminal law also identifies a related crime against humanity of persecution. Under the Rome Statute and customary international law, persecution consists of severe deprivation of fundamental rights of a racial, ethnic, or other group with discriminatory intent.

The ratification by the State of Palestine of these two treaties in recent years has strengthened the legal application of these two crimes in its territory. A ruling by a chamber of the International Criminal Court (ICC) earlier this year confirmed that it has jurisdiction over war crimes and crimes against humanity – including apartheid and persecution – committed in the Occupied Palestinian Territory since 2014.

Across Israel and the occupied territory, Human Rights Watch found that Israeli authorities have pursued an intent to privilege Jewish Israelis at the expense of Palestinians. They have done so by undertaking policies aimed at mitigating what they openly describe as the “demographic threat” Palestinians pose and maximizing the land available for Jewish communities, while concentrating most Palestinian in dense enclaves. The policy takes different forms and is pursued in a particularly severe form in the occupied territory. It includes efforts to, as leading Israelis officials have put it, “Judaize” the Negev and Galilee regions of Israel and to maintain “a solid Jewish majority,” as described in government planning documents, in the Jerusalem municipality, which includes the eastern part of Jerusalem, which Israel unilaterally annexed and occupies. It also encompasses efforts to “settle [Jews in] the land between the [Palestinian] minority population centers and their surroundings” in the West Bank, as set out in plans that have guided the government’s settlement, and to pursue “separation” between the West Bank and Gaza. The policy across the board serves the same fundamental goal: maximum land, minimum Palestinians.

Furthermore, we found that Israeli authorities have carried out the grave abuses needed for the crimes of apartheid and persecution against Palestinians living in the occupied territory. It has done so through, among other policies, sweeping restrictions on movement in the form of the 14-year generalized closure of Gaza and the discriminatory permit system in the West Bank; the confiscation of more than a third of the land in the West Bank; and denial of residency rights to hundreds of thousands of Palestinians and their relatives. Israel has imposed draconian military rule over millions of Palestinians, suspending their basic civil rights, while Jewish Israelis living in the same territory are governed under the permissive Israeli civil law; and imposed harsh conditions in parts of the West Bank that led to forcing thousands of Palestinians out of their homes.

Applying the facts to the laws, Human Rights Watch concluded that Israeli authorities are committing the crimes against humanity of apartheid and persecution. We found that the elements of the crimes come together in the occupied territory as part of a single Israeli government policy. That policy is to maintain the domination by Jewish Israelis over Palestinians across Israel and the occupied territory. It is coupled in the occupied territory with systematic oppression and inhumane acts against Palestinians living there.

As for crimes against humanity, your defense is just “but the other side does it too!” and “I think war crimes against Palestinians are fine since they are in the best interest of Israel!” Which is why I don’t think your a serious person, and I’ve already spent too much time engaging with you.

Please, resume your shilling for one of histories monsters.

Strange thing. Gaza is running out of all sorts of things, but not rockets. 28 days into the war, Hamas is still firing on central Israel
