Animals aren’t concerned with extinction and don’t have committees to vote on what kind of life they should have. They just want to live.

Many would go extinct as they were bred to be killed, not to survive in nature. I’m not sure if you were going there, but that’s not an argument to not stop farming them. The intention here is to stop this cycle where hundreds of billions a year are born into a disfigured body, then live hell and suffering and misery then killed. They should go extinct and that should stop.

      They just want to live.

animal cognitive behaviourists who study the subject have not found proof that non human animals understand personal mortality. that is, they don’t understand that they, themselves, might die. if you don’t know that you might die, you can’t meaningfully be said to want to live.

I’m not even making any claims that are not truisms. Just common knowledge obtained by everyone that has ever had any contact with any animal.

But you do you. I don’t want to continue with this. Be well, happy holidays.

I know trying to convince commie is pointless as they are in every vegan aligned thread arguing indefinitely so this is for the reader.

Sentient animals can have good and bad experiences. In some cases they are simple physical enjoyments, while in other cases they have to do with emotions and pleasant thoughts, which many nonhuman animals are capable of having. Animals who play and social animals who enjoy relating to each other have such experiences.

However, when nonhuman animals die, they can no longer have any positive experiences. When someone dies, they can no longer enjoy all the good things that they could experience if they were to remain alive. Thus all sentient animals can be harmed by death, and actually are so harmed when they die. So sentient animals not only have an interest in not suffering, but also have an interest in remaining alive.

                (Loosely quoted from https://www.animal-ethics.org/interest-in-living)

TLDR; Unless you believe that animals can not have positive experiences it is logically derived that they have interest in living.

this is dissembling. continuing to live can broadly be said to be in every living things interest. that’s not what the discussion is about though.

there is no proof nonhuman animals understand that they might die. we cannot, therefore, conclude whether that’s something they want or don’t want.
