The 90s were pretty cool. Between the cold war and the war on terror. LGBT started being accepted. Super fast development of computers and video games.
Plus back then I didn’t have to pay taxes.
LGBT started being accepted in the 90s??? I live in Cleveland Ohio. We have a suburb Lakewood Ohio.
I don’t know if it’s true today, but in the 90s Lakewood was the second gayest city in the country.
The only place more accepting at that time would have been San Fransisco.
That being said, I can remember in 1994 a guy being killed in Lakewood. He was handcuffed to a fence, and beaten by 4 men with baseball bats.
Niw if you look at a map, you’ll see Lakewood is a very small city. However it does have a huge police presense. The running joke is that for every 4 corner intersection, Lakewood has 3 bars, and 8 cops.
So it’s a small city with heavy police presense. Response time for littering would be around 2 minutes. This would have happened around 2am. So bars are letting out, police strolling the streets looking for drunks causing trouble.
There’s only 3 major streets. There is no doubt in my mind that cops saw a man being beaten bloody with 4 baseball bats. There’s no doubt in my mind that people living along these streets would have heard the screams for mercy.
However, “officially” the corpse wasn’t discovered until 7am, as a mother with her 5 year old son were walking to school. This fence was part of a lot for a catholic elementary school.
The reason they targeted him was because he was gay. And you can say that one targeted killing like that can happen in any time period in any place. And sure, thats right.
But his body, which is in plain sight, during the streets busiest hour. And you mean to tell me, not one person called the police? Not one passerby driving saw him bloody on the sidewalk, arms still cuffed to a fence? Not one person bothered to help?
The reason for that is the mentality at the time was “gay = bad”. People thought he deserved it for being gay.
I went to that school at the time. I never saw the body. But I saw the crime scene aftermath. I was 10 years old at the time. I’m 42 now. The images of that sidewalk still haunt me. Pieces of his brain on the sidewalk. Blood everywhere. It was a brutal beating.
3 years later, different school, and the way kids would bully you was by calling you gay. Gay as an insult. Nothing more. Just being gay in itself being the insult.
I’ve never been gay, but I also have never had anything against it. I also had this strange connection to gay people in the 90s in that I experienced firsthand bullying for “being gay”, even though I wasn’t.
I don’t feel like being gay was starting to be accepted until at least 2003, but argueably more like 2007.
In 1994, the 4 killers had the publics support. Today, I don’t think they would. And I think cops would arrive during the innitial struggle, before they could handcuff him to the fence. He would be beaten up, but he would survive today. In 1994, his corpse was ignored for 5 hours.
Try to imagine that. A corpse left to rot on a sidewalk for 5 hours, ignored, because he was gay. That wouldn’t happen today.
Well if it helps, in the States, there’s been a distinct, right-wing plan to tear down the existing FDR-style democracy and replace it with a hierarchical Christian Nationalist government since the days of Nixon, roughly ~1968. So we’ve had ~57yrs of this toxic, stinking cloud choking the USA, slowly worsening things and preying on blowhards and fools as a voting base to thrive. All aided of course by the progression of late stage capitalism, which tends to act as a tyrant, no matter whatever else is going on.
So… you’re not wrong, if it relates to that stuff.
Unfortunately and tragically, the trend doesn’t seem to have been spotted until far too late in the game, and now we’re collectively staring down the barrel of… whatever terrible weapon of destruction this is.
It’s also relative to your experience. The better days of the 50s and 60s before the mentioned decline wasn’t all that create for all groups in the US. And I say that as a descendant of the group that is pictured as experiencing this optimal period of time (white, middle class, suburbia). Underneath this wholesome prosperity was still class struggles, racism, and injustice.
But… we were doing better than before, and that’s something. It could have continued to spread to others. The 70s were definitely a turning point where we took the worse path and left many potentials behind.
Agree and agree. And social conformity was a hell of an obnoxious boss for just about anyone, during those more prosperous years. (anyone remember the “Mister Bumble” educational videos?)
I have a working theory that when people talk about ‘America being great,’ what they’re mostly longing for is a ~40yr stretch, from approximately the mid-1930’s to the last vestiges of such, around the mid-1970’s. I.e. when there was a healthy, social safety net, Americans were seen as ‘heroes’ by much of the world, and there was a post-war economic boom.
Chronic depression? Missing childhood?
I grew up poor in an Eastern European country and I still remember happiness. In my childhood and in high school. Middle school not so much, I was bullied then.
Age is 30.
My childhood was spent raising my dad. Who despite being in his 30s, acted like an infant.
He always wanted his bottle (booze).
He had to be made sure he went to bed on time, or he’d be cranky.
Needed to be meal prepped.
I’m just glad he didn’t need a diaper.

This completely and wholly ignores the fact that things are getting worse. We’re deep within the sixth major mass extinction event, income inequality is at an all time high greater than the Gilded Age, and billions of people around the world are struggling harder and harder to survive.
Just because there was a very short time where a middle class truly existed does not magically erase everything that is, in fact, happening. Do not let a stupid, ignorant quip innoculate you against action to fix the problems that DO exist.

Part of why we are unhappy is that we do not have any agency in the decisions being made on our behalf. Power and money needs to be decentralized and evenly distributed across the people who work on its behalf. We don’t have that. It seems really basic but it’s why the right keeps acting the same across cultures and languages.
There is an injustice put upon us all by the established institutions - the left tries to make the institutions work while the right tries to tear them down as malfunctioning. We all agree that things aren’t working. We are not able to agree on why because the reasons are many and we are pushed so hard that we cannot spare the attention or energy to do more than want to tear down a single source of frustration.
The way to unite everyone for change is to bring the economy to its knees and make the rich suffer the only way they know how - take their money with the invisible hand of the market. General strike is usually legal. Stochastic violence against corporate executives, lobbyists, and politicians isn’t but just as effective. Don’t forget that the day after United Health lost their CEO, another health coverage denier, Blue Cross, overturned an inhumane business decision they were aiming to force on their customers.
Shame works too but no one seems to want to publicly humiliate the people responsible.
