A potential deal to fund large swaths of the federal government, including the departments of Defense and Health and Human Services, collapsed Thursday night after Colorado senators demanded that Congress stop Trump’s efforts to dismantle a key climate agency.
A Democratic senator involved in the negotiations over passing a five-bill package of appropriations bills before Christmas said Trump’s attempt to break up a premier weather and climate center based in Boulder, Colo., was like a “stick of dynamite” that exploded any chance of a bipartisan breakthrough on spending.
Colorado Sens. Michael Bennet (D) and John Hickenlooper (D) objected to moving forward with the so-called minibus spending package that, if enacted into law, would result in 85 percent to 90 percent of the federal government being funding through September 2026.

Dems had a decent strategy with the Healthcare subsidies. We are only under a continuing resolution and unfortunately the average American is fucking dumb. They cannot understand that something will happen. They only understand when something is happening to them personally.
So the last shutdown was giving dems a bad look because the subsidies hadn’t been canceled yet and people were too dumb to realize the impact.
Now dems have Republicans on record voting against the subsidies and can once again shutdown the government to force them to give in. With broader support from the people.
This is what I think they wanted to do, but they failed big time. They waited so long to sign a continuing resolution the party just looked weak by having caved with no real progress. Long term it still may play out but short term was rough

Two entirely different things. Whether they follow through on a nation wide shutdown (which I agree, they should not have caved) or two senators from a single state say they will not vote for something that directly harms their constituents is apples and oranges.
Did they though? They only passed a continuing resolution. They can reforce the issue with another shutdown after the average American expirences the increased healthcare premiums and after the Republicans explicitly voted against the subsidies.
Short term they look weak, long term it could work though.
