Yes there is a walmart, but only one actual grocery store, and it now stock frozen sushi.
Update: I shared this picture with my local gaming group, one of them went and picked up a tray.
He tossed it into the fridge and tried it this morning.
I had the first piece. It is supposed to be “Refrigerated Only” by the packaging, but honestly, with a fridge thaw, it tastes just fine. I’ve had plenty worse than that.
If I was not vegetarian I would give it a try. The closest place to get sushi to us is an hour drive.
“Fully cooked”
It’s a California Roll, so I guess that makes sense.
When I was working in the middle of the desert near death valley on solar power plants, I tried sushi at some Chinese joint. Holy shit it made me so sick hahaha.

I hate it.
Mildly repulsive.
I had something like that once from Aldi. It said on the package to heat it in the microwave. I figured it couldn’t hurt to follow the instructions… It was so incredibly bad…
I was already upset at the frozen sushi but you just had to go and make this microwave sushi comment. I think I’m done for the night.
I saw it on Lidl. I looked disgusting.
You’re braver than I’ll ever be for trying.
If you’ve had this before and know what to expect then by all means, enjoy away. But if you’re expecting this to be anything like more traditional sushi you will be sorely disappointed.
I don’t know what to expect. How does it compare to fresh?
My main problem with this stuff is the rice. It’s not really individual grains, it’s congealed into a solid, dry mass. Very unpleasant.
It’s absolutely awful.
My sushi journey started with a similar item from Costco, however not frozen.
Growing up we were forced to take fish liver oil, and any time I tasted sushi all I could taste was fish oil. But the CA rolls from Costco did not have that fish oil taste. After eating it for years I was able move onto better sushi.
I don’t know the brand, or even where it was bought, but my experience with, like, prepackaged sushi is that it seems to have a stronger flavor, though less refined in a sense. They also seem to have a tendency to put a bit of wasabi in nigiri under the fish. I think also a tendency to have a lot of surimi with strong flavor.
Wouldn’t complain about having it though, it’s still nice, mostly just ends up feeling kinda samey.
Not sure how that tastes but have heard stories of frying some in mayonnaise.
Oh no.
Fully Cooked! Nice
Right? I hate how most sushi comes raw and you have to cook it yourself 😡
That’s fine, I wouldn’t touch frozen grocery store ngiri with a thousand-foot pole.
Same with steak tartare
Yes they are not cutting any corners.
That seems like it’s supposed to be the grab and go kind that’s not frozen when you buy it.
I see these at 7/11 just with a different label. I’m sure it’s all from the same factory.
If it’s gonna be previously-frozen sushi, better it should still be frozen so at least you know when you started thawing it out.
It’s typically just the fish that was previously frozen, and that’s to kill any parasites. I’ve never seen the entire maki roll frozen lmao, of course that will be bad.
Yes it’s definitely not ideal. But in a wasteland with no sushi at all I suppose it’s… something. Freezing would help keep the rice from becoming dangerous, as well as the surimi and mayo. But it’s not great for texture.
I thought this was dull men at first
After I posted here, I realized that would have been a better choice.
Why Frozen instead of refrigerated?
To make it gross?
If you’re in America, all fish is flash frozen anyway, even “fresh” sushi or sashimi.
Flash freezing individual fish feels a bit different than taking out that (presumably thawed) fish, using it to make sushi rolls, and then refreezing it.
Edit: My perception was obscured by disgust and I didn’t realize these are California rolls and don’t have fish, but the point stands. Frozen rice and frozen avocado are fucking gnarly. Frozen avocado especially is a sin.
CrabStick is still usually made from fish.
They use surimi, don’t they? Fake crab made from fish paste. Still fish.
Oh yeah didn’t even think about the avocado. Good point!
Thats fake crab. It’s pre cooked before even going into the rolls.
Extended shelf life maybe?
Eew.
I’m going to have to gate keep here.
California Rolls are not sushi.
You can find it on sushi restaurant menus here in Japan, so that seems a rather pointless thing to gatekeep.
You can buy blue colored Ramon in japan. You can get sushi with spam. What’s your point? Just because you can buy it in a store doesn’t mean much.
What’s your thought on salmon sushi? It’s a pretty recent dish, introduced by Norwegian salmon farmers to Japanese sushi chefs in the 80’s. Clearly not traditional in the historic sense.
I fucking love salmon sushi
Never tried it. No current opinion here.
Is this really the hill you want to die on? How do you think dishes are invented? People made them, others like it. Enough to get a name and reputation.
If you’re still going to claim a California roll isn’t sushi, when nearly all of civilization agrees it is, you’re dumb.
Ok, so you think my opinion is dumb. Well, i think yours is dumb. See how that works? Just because I’m disagreed with does not make my opinion anyones but mine. Clearly not all of civilization either considering at least one other person gave me even a single upvote. Only sith deal in absolutes.
No, I said you are dumb if this is the way you think.
Didn’t say “all” either. Reading isn’t your thing.
Bro are you ok? You literally said “all” in your sentence. Just because you added the “nearly” in front doesn’t mean you didn’t say it. Damn, it’s right there yo.
They didn’t deal in absolutes, they dealt in conditionals.
Didn’t know: “nearly all civilization agrees” was only conditional. Right.
Why is Ramón blue?! Give him CPR instead of chatting here!!
Yes technically it’s a maki roll, and sushi is thing over rice, but everyone calls maki rolls sushi these days.
“thing over rice” is nigiri. Nigiri, sashimi, and Maki rolls are all types of sushi.
Actually sushi has to have rice by definition so sashimi isn’t sushi.
yep, you are correct; i always accidentally lump it in together because of how related/similar they are, my bad.
Damn, you’re right. My goof
Guess i was more leaning towards the fact is avocado and fake crab. Like California roll is to sushi what the crunch wrap is to burrito.
Crunch wraps are tostadas that have been wrapped so they do not fall apart, and they are fucking delicious.
Kani and avocado are both widely used in Japan. How are they not legitimate ingredients to you? Kani was literally invented in Japan
I did say i was gate keeping here, right? Or did i miss my first post?
Where you placed the gate makes no sense so I was asking you to expound
Oh, so you’re gate keeping my gate keeping?
Usually when someone gatekeeps, they have a rationale. Assuming there was thought behind this was my mistake.
Are you gaslighting us right now?
When you’re gatekeeping, it’s fair for people to open it, yeah? Else, where’s the fun?
Ok
