So, starting now, Google started mandating full JS for YT, effectively breaking all third-party clients and locking the site to their official client.

This reeks of DRM.

UPDATE: Installing Deno and installing yt-dlp through PyPi fixes yt-dlp but the very idea that Google is mandating JS to lock down YT in an attempt at pseudo-DRM is still crappy.

UPDATE #2: inv.nadeko.net is working again for now.

With a custom, very restrictive license. Builds are not reproducible, and code from the project cannot be used elsewhere. For the purposes of security, transparency, and advancing development of (proper) FOSS YouTube clients, Grayjay is effectively closed source.

FUTO are the ones changing the meaning of words. The Open Source Definition has existed for a long time and clearly explains what it means. While Grayjay is “source available”, and that’s good, it definitely is not open source.

Never heard of it but absolutely checking this one out.

I am still hoping invidious will also take this route as i love the ability to self self host to retain my user data.

I gladly hear that i am wrong here but i think PeerTube only works with PeerTube sources, and definitely not youtube sources.

I meant as far as being able to self host and retain your user data, at least on PT anyways, you can do that by design and unless Google broke the ability to mirror to alternative platforms, you could mirror your YT stuff over.

I am confused to what your saying?

I have a few hundred “subscriptions” on youtube channels trough invidious (no google account), are you saying i can mirror others people uploads trough PeerTube cause i am changing in a heartbeat to any inch further away from youtube that still allows me to watch my favorite creators.

Mirroring is more for your own content, unless you get permission to set up an instance to mirror others’ content to like the numerous mirroring instances already on PT.

Generally though, just like with Odysee, mirroring is for content you made.

                  Thats what i though.

My suggestion is to maken clients (preferably invidious) accept other sources and comes from a consumer standpoint.

I don’t want to lose the creators i follow, i want them to migrate away from YouTube.

Creators themselves may not want to migrate because they will lose new upload hype Income from youtube.

Releasing on youtube (or floatplane) first while mirroring older content to peertube seems ideal to create slow and steady momentum where:

The creators get to keep the existing upload hype and income while also building new presence away from youtube.

The audience gets to consume their content of all creators from a singular place and possibly can set preferences to use the PeerTube mirror as a source when its available and the youtube source when there is not.

Creator also don’t have to worry as much about losing the audience when they do cut with youtube completely because the client will serve them from the new source automatically. (Does require some public register of official sources by real creators)
