I asked grok About a simple cam thats at least as good as the cams of iPhone 15 pro and/or the latest Google pixel Models.

I just want quick unprofessional photos that still Look nice and Detailed.

He recommended to to me the following Models and I Need yalls opinion:

  • Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III
  • Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II
  • Panasonic Lumix ZS200 (TZ200)
  • Ricoh GR III

To be honest I wanted something below 500€ but I guess I have to reach deeper into my pockets for something nice. Do yall think its worth paying quite a bit more? Or would yall Not pay much more for a nice compact cam?

If you have other recommendations please do throw them into Discussion!

Edit: sheesh i forgot this is lemmy with all the anti ai stuff. In any case I understand the hate but can we please just focus on the matter at Hand?

Honestly, if you want “quick unprofessional photos” stick with a smartphone.

Standalone cameras don’t have nearly the processing or automated modes of modern phones. So while bigger sensors and better glass can get you a better image it comes along with needing to know how to use the camera and processing the photos afterwards.

That said if you still want something at a decent price I’d be looking at a used Fuji x100 or Sony rx100.

I find that my Sony RX100 produces better photos than my Pixel phone. It has an auto mode that generally picks the right settings.

The pictures are more detailed and less blurry, especially in low light.

The only post processing necessary is copying the pictures from the SD card, which is admittedly a pretty big hassle.

You’re right about buying one second hand, since they’re incredibly expensive.

The SD card? I have to track down my SD card reader, copy the pictures over, and then upload them to my photo service. It’s not a huge amount of work, but I’m pretty lazy.

My rx100 doesn’t have Wi-Fi. I assume newer cameras would do that automatically, but I don’t want to spend $600+ to get another good point n shoot.

Please don’t use Grok. That’s just supporting Musk.

Also, why would you ask an AI if you were going to ask people anyway?

Cmon, now you are just being mean.

Ai was used just for insights. Asking here is among the ‘proper’ due diligence.

I just don’t understand why someone would willingly add an unecessary middleman. Just ask the Internet directly, no need to run it through a word prediction algorithm based on input from the Internet.

I dont understand whats the issue with getting more than 1 source of Info? Especially when half the replies on this thread are either dont use ai or Stick to a smartphone even though i asked for Camera recommendations specifically… (Not saying they dont have their Place ofc but cmon)

Admittedly the other source of Info does Not have to be ai but can we just forget that for a Moment? This post is Not about ai and honestly i shouldnt even have mentioned to have used grok in the First Place atp

Well are there Alternatives with similar capablities as grok? I just decided its worth a try.

I ask people and ai to collect Info. Why I used grok even though I ask around Here now? I wanted to try it out for research purposes

It sounds like the cameras you are looking for are in the Cannon Powershot ELPH range (sub $500).

I’m still using an original Sony RX100. I think it’s something like ten or twelve years old.

The photos it produces look better than smartphone pictures, especially in low light.

It’s the kind of thing that’s a hassle to carry around, so I usually just bring it to family gatherings or my kids milestone events. Otherwise, I use phone pics.

Instead of a “compact camera”, I’d recommend getting a used Lumix DMC-GX80 + the 20 mm pancake prime lens. If you don’t like primes and prefer to zoom, you can get a compact zoom lens instead.

Some people really don’t like buying used camera equipment… but I have had only positive experiences so far.

Yeah, I get that. I think that this camera + lens combination would meet your criteria while giving you pretty decent quality and the ability to upgrade. It is what I have recommended in the past to people asking this same question and they have been very happy with it. You can pass the idea through Grok, I think it will agree ;)
