recently bought 2 of the beelink mini PCs - they seem pretty solid so far - they are quite a bit more expensive than the pi but I think they offer pretty good bang for the buck for a small form factor server.

Given that they know exactly who you are, I wouldn’t get too personal with anything but it is amazing for many otherwise time-consuming problems like programming. It’s also quite good at explaining concepts in math and physics and and is capable of reviewing and critiquing student solutions. The development of this tool is not miraculous or anything - it uses the same basic foundation that all machine learning does - but it’s a defining moment in terms of expanding capabilities of computer systems for regular users.

But yeah, I wouldn’t treat it like a personal therapist, only because it’s not really designed for that, even though it can do a credible job of interacting. The original chat bot Eliza, simulated a “non directional” therapist and it was kind of amazing how people could be drawn into intimate conversations even though it was nothing like ChatGPT in terms of sophistication - it just parroted back what you asked it in a way that made it sound empathetic. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ELIZA

they don’t get ad revenue from you, they get it from the firms they will be selling your data to. If you are commenting and you have a profile then whatever info they have or can guess about your demographic will be monetized.

It’s good to see Lemmy getting some love, athough I did get a chuckle at the “this whole fediverse concept is so hard to get your head around” stuff. They are so used to being fed what the algorithm delivers that they are lost without it. It’s so touchingly Orwellian.

Connect the router’s WAN port into the cable modem. Plug your stuff into the router LAN ports or connect to the new router wifi. Set pi hole to a static address and then set the router’s DNS to point to that. Remove any secondary DNS in the router settings. Reboot everything and make sure it all works. That should be about it.

Go for it. the specs on the laptop are good enough to run plenty of stuff as a server. As long as the drive can be mounted you should be good. Your backups should be somewhere else.

I don’t know how total emissions stack up for wool vs synthetic production, but the article suggests that sustainability be used as a rationale for subsidies.

My uneducated guess is that the raw material is only a fraction of the processing, manufacturing and distribution costs.

The only thing I can think of is that the labor costs must be so much higher for processing and manufacturing woolen products vs synthetic, i.e. wool price must be a relatively factor of the total cost - otherwise there’s no explanation, although I don’t know the ecological equation between wool and synthetics. You’d think wool would be better for the environment to produce and consume though.

Unrest spreads to French overseas territories

Riots have erupted in French Caribbean territories to protest the police shooting death of a teenager in a Paris suburb, with at least one person killed as people set fire to dumpsters and damaged buildings.

The worst violence so far was in French Guiana, where authorities said that police officers came under fire and that a stray bullet killed a 54-year-old government worker late Thursday in the capital, Cayenne.

Columns of thick black smoke rose above some neighboorhoods in Cayenne, turning streets hazy as police tried to quell protesters in the small territory on the shoulder of South America. Authorities urged calm as the territory braced for another possible night of rioting.
