I agree, a huge drop in people making less than $5 a day, does not equal a huge drop in people with guaranteed access to medicine food, etc.
However, it does mean that a ton of people now have at least 5 more dollars. Not a life changing amount, but it is an incremental improvement.
And realistically, that’s how we’re going to complex social problems like global poverty. With incremental improvements.
Note that the graph doesn’t say which policies are causing the drop. Only that a drop is happening. It is possible (in fact likely) that some policies are making things worse (IMF restructuring prioritizing private creditors over local people) and other policies are making things better (PEPFAR)
The graph also shows that while the current mix of policies correlates with huge drops in extreme poverty, it has barely made a dent in regular poverty (< $30/day). This shows that if our goal is to get rid of all poverty, the current policy mix is not doing that.
Just because you can’t derive any use from the graph, doesn’t mean it’s useless.

You basically described VAT. Which works extremely well. Some small tweaks to capture all revenue (not just sales) and a wealth tax to discourage hoarding and revenue taxation would function quite well.
Honestly, I jumped the gun with the “destiny must die” statement. I got snookered by the article’s false dichotomy of “it must be one ore the other.”
The best thing bungie can probably do is to keep both of them running. Dropping destiny isn’t magically going to fix bungie. But, then again neither is dropping marathon.
If forced to choose, I’d still pick marathon. I don’t know if it’s the revenue maximizing choice, but Sony has already acknowledged that Bungie isn’t a $3.6 billion company. I’d rather have a smaller Bungie focussed on making good game(s) than a Bungie desperately trying (and failing) to restart the destiny money printer.
Destiny should die. The story has no where left to go and there literally no plan on how to fix PvP so it doesn’t suck.
Marathon is not great, but it has room to grow. I don’t know why the article thinks it’s a smarter idea for Bungie to “pause D2” and spend years thinking up, funding and implementing a currently nonexistent “Destiny 3”. Instead of just addressing user feedback in Marathon.

Theoretically you can lose more than 100%. If you first win 2000% and then lose everything, you’ve technically lost 2100% of your starting capital.

Creating a simple intuitive UI for document editing is hard. I’m not saying Microsoft succeeded at creating that with Word; but let’s be honest no else has either.
