The explosives used on those drones are far from enough to turn a whole vehicle into shrapnel. If they bailed out and laid on the ground they likely would have been uninjured. But think from their perspective, you could jump out and run away hoping the drone chases someone else, or you could stay in the truck and maybe out run it.
