I can sort of agree suicide is a permanent solution to what may be temporary problems. All for it for terminal illness but having been depressed before and had friends who were many would have taken this route and not lived to see happier days. I agree with personal choice philosophically but there are so many externalities that need to be solved first: poverty, mental health care etc before this can be implemented

So ok I’ve been hearing the arming argument, but what situation exactly would we use it? Is this for a hypothetical civil war? Or to defend yourself from far right mobs? These are the only two scenarios which it would seem to make sense; and they seem mostly far fetched. Anything less than that is just a great way for the police to add charges and or give them an excuse to shoot you.

I think our society in reality is fine mostly; gun sales to conservatives under the Obama administration surged due to their fears at the time; now it happens again just in reverse.

The key problem is that the internet is separating people and allowing foreign actors and cynical domestic interests to create filters of what people hear and see.

you count yourself among a learned few then you should go out and create local events and spread local news as much as possible. People need to interact outside of their bubbles more and they would come to see mostly that they are both reasonable. It is only the facts that are current in question between the two isles, not necessarily the principles.

Yeah I think a local Git server would be good, will try our forgejo since people seem to like it— I’ve been using git for a lot of projects but not so much for large files and HW stuff since when using GitHub there are size limitations. Does seem like it would be freeing to be able to delete whatever I want from my workstation without worrying about losing stuff

Yeah, I really should start using Git for everything, but I’ve been working with a lot of large datasets recently (mostly EEG data). A big part of improving accuracy comes from cleaning the data, which is huge and takes a while to process. I could set up a local Git server to keep track of everything or just save the base data files and regenerate as needed, but on my current setup, that process can take anywhere from 2-6 hours depending on the task. So for now, I’ve just been managing everything locally to save time.

I think one advantage lemmy might have is the possibility of expanding the number of sorting metrics allowing users to sort things the way they choose rather than a few monolithic sort options.

Has anyone been able to find the actual audio? I suspect given the participants it’s probably a cringe-fest but it’s disturbing to me that the news is jumping all over it to the point where it’s difficult to actually find the source and listen and do you own analysis.

This seems to be an ongoing problem not just for this story; I’m constantly having to dig to actually find the thing that every news channels talking heads is doing their own half-baked analysis on.
