  • The state I was born in has a public birth record, everything about me was already on the internet before I was an adult. I started trying to get my online info removed as an adult but it is like a game of whack-a-mole plus I get the patronizing: “all info we have is public record, we’re not doing anything wrong.” Then when I vote, the voting registry is public so even more up-to-date info of me gets leaked online 🫠 I froze my credit since I’m paranoid.

As for the government, well they already have all of my info, not much I can do about that. They’ve been spying on their citizens for decades, their surveillance expands more and more as time passes on.

  • I recommend against Hawaii. It’s not exactly self sustaining since there are too many people living there. Housing/rent is crazy high so there are many homeless. Everything is much more expensive. Jobs can be hard to find. The islands are sinking. Storms still hit every season. Depending on the island, you may be dealing with volcanic eruptions and vog. And I do believe their coral reefs are bleaching. It sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. Then factor in the locals, they only want locals living there and to restore their Hawaiian Kingdom, #GoHomeHaole. Best to pick somewhere else.

  • Nah, I’ve got a zoomer relative that has learned helplessness around computers. They have their own computer for gaming and need me to hold their hand through everything. I tell them to web search, they say they don’t understand what anything means, so I have to hold their hand through web searching to fix their problem. If something doesn’t work from steam when they double click it, they can’t figure it out. They get an error message at any point and their only solution is to bug someone else about it. I refuse to solve their problem without telling them to web search it, that is how you are supposed to learn. It’s super annoying so I started telling them “idk, google it.” They still bug others instead now.

I also have a zoomer friend older than my relative that is also a PC gamer, they are slightly better but still need people to guide them through screen share.

  • I just read this on chapo.chat, what a rollercoaster ride! You can read the admin update here, it looks like they will keep their domain since the auction was cancelled🤞

    Admin response

you do not need to do anything

i am so sorry for the confusion, honestly the whole situation is confusing.

Years ago when we changed to hexbear.net an admin bought the domain name from a domain registrar.

That admin had things come up and wasn’t able to be as active or available.

A small issue with paying for the domain name for the year 2025 happened and the payment was 1 day late.

The domain registrar (digital landlord) took the payment and also put the domain “hexbear.net” up for auction pointing to policy that says if you are late on payment they can auction your domain name.

The admin who owns the domain escalated the issue to the top level up support for the domain registrar. During that time we tried a technical route for moving the domain name to a new registrar, which we did not expect to work. The technical route had a 5 day delay on finding out if it worked or not, during that time is when we set up the vote for what name the community would want in the event we lost hexbear.net

At this moment we still do not know if we have it or not so we are continuing with moving towards hexbear.chat but think that we might have mitigated the worst case scenario with a malicious person getting the hexbear.net domain through the aforementioned technical route.

We are currently working on an updated post to give all the info we have at this time.

    j_s bidder mystery possibly solved

Glad it’s resolved: If anyone is curious on the behind-the-scenes the j_s bidder was planning to return the domain but maybe not in the best way. They found a bug in Sav’s site that allowed them to bid without authorizations being placed, and on another account they managed to “win an auction” for low dollar value domain AND transferred it out somehow. Maybe they noticed, might be why their auction interface was in maintenance mode immediately as this was going on (archive from 19 Feb 2025 10:26:35 UTC https://archive.is/qsVg6 ).

  • I used to like rap and hip hop decades ago, but now I have I guess you could say “comfort” artists I listen to instead (mostly alt rock, instrumentals, old songs with lyrics or sounds that trigger specific feelings I have). I know nothing about the rap beef that’s been going on and I felt like I had to be in the loop to really appreciate the halftime show, and be an actual fan. I saw the show online and I did think Kendrick Lamar’s rapping ability was impressive and I liked Samuel L Jackson as uncle Sam. But I would not watch it again. I don’t look like these guys at all, I just recognize I’m not the target audience and I don’t need to make a fuss about it. I also don’t think it sucked or was the worst.

  • I was gifted a reverb g2 some years ago. It was ok, had some problems getting custom bindings to work in Skyrim VR that killed the game for me. I want the index next since it will have linux support and hopefully won’t die like WMR did but I also want to wait for the next index, whatever upgraded headset they make next.

  • You literally called the vegans in lemmy communities “veganazis” and I’m not going to let that slide, it is not ok.

No it does not prove your point, I did not address “militant” vegans and “sane” vegans because I think your thoughts on this are reactionary bullshit. I don’t think you’ve even been in the vegan lemmy communities, because vegans are actual people with different views and you only want to talk about a stereotype carnists use to whine. You want nuance but don’t give it to vegans. Why? I mean you’re either a troll or misguided.

I have a non-vegan/carnist SO, I’m not the only one that dates non-vegans. My family is non-vegan. My friends in RL are all non-vegan. You apparently know all about my life even though I have never tried to convert people into a “cult” or shunned people for not being vegan. I have only talked about veganism when it is prompted, like when people were curious why I decided to switch or online when the subject comes up. Different vegans have different approaches to things. Some vegans only date other vegans.

I felt you leaned reactionary due to your take on veganism but replied anyway in good faith because your use of the word Nazi was unacceptable. Why is it a cult to not eat meat? Why am I the Nazi for wanting the animals to stop dying? The answer to me is that people who eat meat can get incredibly defensive when you point out that it is messed up what happens to animals so that they can eat meat from the grocery store. It is bad for the environment too. In order to deflect from this revelation they decide their behavior is not the problem, it is the “militant” vegans in a “cult” thinking they are better than everyone that is the problem. This is all reactionary thinking. I’ve only seen this reaction online and once in person. I would love for everyone to be a vegan but I know it is not realistic. It is not a matter of how vegans communicate, it is how people process their justification for eating meat. You can be as sweet as possible about being vegan and a carnist will still spit in your face. They don’t want to hear about veganism, they frankly don’t give a shit about animals no matter how you deliver the message to them.
