I used to think so too, but talking about it with a few friends that genuinely gave Mastodon a shot, I changed my mind.
Federation (not easily understandable) + Lack of users (and thus content) are the main reasons.

Since the barriers of entry on mastodon are too high for mainstream users, Bluesky is probably a good thing imo.
Jinx is not amused by this statement
As some said, it’s fine!
I have it installed on my raspberry pi to run Jellyfin and a few other apps, and it’s been mostly stable. However I’ve had the same thoughts as you, so I can confirm that you won’t be able to learn as much with it.
Some of my other needs are hosted on a VPS without CasaOS, and that’s where I was able to learn most of what I know. It’s also where I spent the most time configuring and fixing incompatibilities.
I’d suggest that you keep CasaOS for the things you want to depend on, and start learning on another system without CasaOS by installing apps you’re interested to try out. This way you’ll learn about reverse proxies, certificates, docker, etc, without being afraid to mess up your current setup.
Sure but… It’s still a really good advice and I’m glad someone posted it. I rarely rake away leaves for reasons like this, and this gives me one extra reason to not do so.
That doesn’t mean you’re wrong, but we can all be right : fight the important battles for large scale effects while enjoying the small scale effects of individual actions.
You can feel that he made good business decisions, but it’s pretty awful to be rewarded so much for being the root cause of so many layoffs, don’t you think?
Why is this getting downvoted?
I’m loving Zen browser at the moment
Guess I’ve only been supporting the 10%
Looks like excalidraw to me, but not sure!
Yep. I stupidly thought I could use it on my work laptop. Big nope, I had to go back after 2 hours.
It has great potential, but it’s still far from being ready… 😔
Those who grew up with Terraria and Minecraft in their golden era are young adults.
So I’d say you’re not a young adult at least, wouldn’t say you’re old though.
What the actual fuck. In what country do you live?
I couldn’t disagree more, emojis are amazing. They bring life to conversation, they help convey emotions, and they can be fun !
If you don’t have chronoc headaches / migraines, you don’t necessarily have to follow this advice.
Taking a pill for the slightest pain will be detrimental in the long run for your liver and the painkiller’s efficiency.
Because most things built with Rust are faster than their equivalent, especially electron-based apps.
So as a user, regardless of the cult following, i’m happy that this tech exists and is being adopted so fast.
Oh I see that there are “t” versions which are much more up to date! (2.1, latest in 2024-05). I didn’t know about these versions, thank you so much.
Can you confirm that I’ll need to wipe everything to switch from R to T? Or is there a way to bridge to that version without data loss?

What I meant behind federation was that the registration process can be hard to understand. But you’re right, after passing this step, you don’t really notice federation.
As for the self fulfilling prophecy, I think you’re right, which is why I still try to nudge my friends towards mastodon / pixelfed. I still believe in these projects, but I also don’t think Bluesky will be too detrimental to their growth.
