Yeah, the guy’s read a lot of Charles Bukowski and Harvey Pekar, so it’s not surprising that he has a great way of telling slice-of-life stories. Not to mention he did a lot of interviews of major punk rockers and related writing.

• https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alison_Bechdel. literally a MacArthur-winning genius. earned acclaim for her later graphic novels, but she has an earlier strip called “Dykes to Watch out For” that has some excellent characterization and captures a moment in time that is very relevant

Cartoonists who work with longer forms, while keeping a cartoony style:

Those don’t seem to have the yellow stitching that Docs do. The heel looks just a little too high to be “regular” combat boots. The way the tongue bends suggests cheap synthetic material, rather than leather. If you go to amazon and search for “vegan combat boots” you’ll find a lot of cheaply-made fashion boots for under $50, I’m guessing it’s something like that.
