There is always a well-known solution to every human problem - neat, plausible, and wrong.

  • Generally the benchmark for AGI has been “human level intelligence” meaning that from there on AI is also the best AI researcher and human input is no longer needed in developing it. That’s where the concept of singularity or intelligence explosion stems from.

The narrative here tends to be that it goes from AGI to ASI (Artificial Super Intelligence) very rapidly but in my view there’s not a significant difference between the two. AI that is as intelligent as a human but not more would still process information about a million times faster so effectively it would still be superintelligent.

  • That article reports that Anthropic told investors it expected one profitable quarter in 2026. It does not claim the company as a whole had become profitable.

Anthropic has raised large amounts of money by giving investors special instruments that can later turn into stock. When the company’s overall value rises a lot, the value of those instruments also rises. Accounting rules require the company to record that increase as a loss on its books, even though no cash actually went out the door to anyone. This explains about 72 of those 80 billion. It’s not actual money spent.

  • Anthropic has committed to spending at least $518 billion over a decade on cloud services, computing and infrastructure.

They’re betting everything on AGI. I don’t think anyone there at any point has even hoped that the tiny initial revenue streams would cover the absolutely gigantic upfront costs of setting everything up.

Now, whether they’ll actually reach AGI before this thing implodes is anyone’s guess. The people who claim that they absolutely will are full of shit just like the ones claiming they absolutely will not. Nobody knows and only time will tell.

  • You’re not trying to remove a moral status but deny it in the first place. That’s different but the end result of it still seems the same.

We used to justify the mistreatment of animals with the assumption that they had no subjective experience either. I’m not suggesting AI does but I’m also not claiming it with absolute certainty does not either, and the more we develop those systems, the more likely it seems to me that at some point there’s a good chance that they will.

The psychological drive behind the urge to call something with a derogatory term is the same in both cases.

  • My hot take is that anyone intentionally being mean to an AI is not a psychologically stable person and similar behaviour can most likely be observed in other parts of their life as well.

This is why “Westworld” would never work. Whether the robots there actually feel anything is beside the point. We’d simply view the people who go there to take pleasure in abusing these human-like machines as the sadistic psychopaths that they are.
