Is there any community or communities you like the most?
Does anyone know of communities where the posts are many paragraphs of OC selftext with the comments discussing it? I don’t really care what the content is, but that’s for format I’m looking for. So far it’s just links, cat pics, and memes…
Agreed! I loved communities like AITA, relationship advice, etc… on Reddit.
Lemmy is still in that early link aggregator stage, Reddit was like this too for awhile.
as the saying goes, be the change you wish to see…
You may want to check out tildes.net – great community, totally text focused experience. I find that tildes complements lemmy well, and end up on both (in addition to a few other sites) to get a well rounded aggregation/discussion experience.
Thanks for the recommendation!
Oh nice, I’ll give it a look
Do you have an account on there by any chance? It seems to be invite only…
Best of redditor updates was my favorite of these, even if most of them were probably made up.
Oh yah, that one was great!
You’ll probably need to wait a bit for those, or else start one.
People were willing to write that kind of stuff on Reddit because they knew people would see it. Possibility of attention incentivizes people to put the work in.
Here…not so much. Less incentive to put effort into big text posts without more people. Lemmy’s less than perfect sorting for Hot or Active is helping much either.
That’s kind of how Reddit was at first, too. All of this will take shape eventually it’s just not here quite yet.
I’ve made a few text/discussion based posts on a dnd community and got good engagement. People are wrong if you give them a chance.
Be the change you want to see. It’s never more true than at the beginning of something like we are now. I’ve only been here a month or two and I ashtray feel like I’ve seen Lemmy evolve over that time. It’s cool!
Ah, that would make sense
Shameless plug for my community [email protected] which I think is quite neat. Best gaming community imo
This is a great community.
The Lemmy community is far better than the subreddit
Hey thanks! Glad you like it :)
Almost any community named “cat” or “dog”. People should post more pictures of their happy non-human family.
Please. I need a way to break up the solid pages of awful global news in my feed, and I haven’t got any of my own to hug.
edited to add: here’s a list of cat communities , if there are other lists for other animals let me know.
Some other animal communities I subscribe to (not exhaustive):
I’m doing my part!
And I’m doing my part!
So sweet. Please spread the joy to your choice of cat community too!
I appreciate you. All three of you. And I really like the sunflower scratching post too!
My fiancé got it, as she loves sunflowers. And we appreciate you too!
Might I also suggest you post them on any of the communities on this catsubs list - I’m sure lots of otherpeople would enjoy it too.
I’d be happy to do so, but I’m not quite sure how to post something to a cat community on Kbin. If you don’t mind giving me a 20 second tutorial, I’d be appreciative! I’ll post to one or two of the cat communities on Lemmy though since I’m here.
Lemmy and kbin are federated so posting on lemmy is just fine and will likely find the same people.
But also if you search for any community in the lemmy search like “[email protected]” (no quotes) it should let you post in that community like any other lemmy community. Assuming everything is working today on the fediverse.
Direct links in different formats:
- Lemmy style: !cats
- Kbin style: @cats
- Direct url to kbin community via lemmy.world (or your lemmy instance): https://lemmy.world/c/[email protected]
- Direct url to kbin community: https://kbin.social/m/Cats
I’ve been trying my best at getting [email protected] going. It needs more activity, I can only photograph so many owls!
Oh that’s good. It reminds me of when Al Pacino was in that movie about a guy who’s great with scarves.
I didn’t need to block communities when I first started lemmy, but then predictably became necessary as time passed so went block crazy and now feed is easier again to try and find intersting communities when browsing all over news agregators.
That’s the thing though, I do want to know about the topics and events, they’re important and have huge consequences. But previously I was relying on nice things from communities I enjoy hearing from to space the more painful content out.
I have learnt that nice content requires a lot more activity if it stands a chance against the sheer volume of news created. But I also know there are lots of people here who have nice content to share that would benefit us all.
I used to, but I’ve switched entirely over the RSS after years of relying on places like reddit for news. It’s still the same news sources, but I noticed now seeing all the articles released that day how much stuff is cherry picked to submit that has the best chance of gaining traction due to alarmist headlines. So seeing a lot more of the headlines without the community algorithm that determines what is shown.
Fair point. Perhaps I need to finally do the RSS thing. I guess the old ways are the best after all…
Why do people block communities instead of using the subscribed feed? It feels like too much work. Did people really browse /r/all or the front page of reddit that much? That sounds like a nightmare. No wonder people complained about the mass of low effort posts. You’re subjecting yourself to them.
People are trying to find new communities to subscribe to. New has been a good way to find them.
As for Reddit that’s what amazing browser extensions like RES and third party browsers like RiF were for to filter out content by blocking subs, keywords, urls, and flairs, which made /r/all a pretty pleasant experience over default.
I included a list of animal communities in this post here (among other fun/casual communities). Some you didn’t mention:

I don’t see a way to comment on the cat sub list but I’d like to plug [email protected] for cat memes.
With the death of reddit, the only thing i mourned was the loss of r/196 but now I have [email protected]
I’ve been seeing this in the All section… what is it?
It is a meme community that is LGBT oriented and left-leaning
Ahhh this makes a lot of sense! Thank you 🙏
World’s finest queer shitposting

I made a list of good casual Lemmy communities recently that you might find helpful :)

Some of my favorite communities that are fun and active are:
I appreciate they aren’t all from the same instance!
SUBSCRIBED
This is delightfully random and weird.
I happen to like [email protected]
Probably because I am a mod there. :-)
Been liking [email protected]
fixed link
I see we’re all shilling the communities we mod, which makes sense if you think about it. So in that vein:
For more gamedev-related communities we’ve got a sticky post here, and for more crafting communities of all shapes and sizes there’s one here!
Apart from those I’ve been hanging around in [email protected] since both my and its very first day here on Lemmy. Like the name suggests, basically just casual UK chatter without the scourge of politics. Lots of moaning about the weather.
[email protected] could do with more Pratchett fans finding it, it’s been pretty dead for the last month (not entirely surprising though as the subreddit wasn’t huge either).
And another shoutout to [email protected] because LOL.
[email protected] helps to feed my starship addiction.
Subbed. Thanks :) I love communities like this
Are there other imaginary communities like the subreddits? Like /r/imaginarylandscapes, dwarves, elves, portals, etc. Even one that cross posts from reddit would be cool
Sorry for the stupid question, why the community names are sometimes prefixed with a “!” ?
That’s how you link to Communities on Lemmy. Basically the same thing as the “r/” prefix on Reddit.
Because if you leave off the !, your device will try to open those links in email.
You’re right. But I wonder why they didn’t go the Mastodon route by using a @
That one is used for linking users.
Other than the ones we mod, you mean? 🤭
I might be a little biased but I agree
Holy hell
