I don’t use reddit anymore because <obvious reasons> but sometimes a relevant thread comes up in a web search.
But since they force you to log in they lost even the last bit of my traffic.
they dont want lurkers, they want people that logged in. the thing is they ban so many people last year, most became lurkers to protect thier accounts. There is enough old content on reddit you dont really need to login anyways, for question you might have for specific niche, which was og reddit is made for to replace fourms. not the current events slop.
Agree “many obvious reasons”. That said I feel as though there may be some merit to the “we need a way to keep AI bots from just taking all our content and reselling it via AI”.
There are a million other reasons to stop using Reddit and I won’t be going back.
But for years they built up a ton of great user contributed content. Just like it’s unfair for art, music, other content to be absorbed / plagiarized and repackaged as AI… it is also unfair that web bots steal all the old/good Reddit content and don’t give credit + make money off content generated by old Reddit.
Reddit’s problems started before the recent increase of capability in AI.
It started with all the AMA stuff, then the API BS convinced a lot of people to leave and that was before AI bots were really a thing. In the olden days when moderation was still being done the bots would have been eliminated, via various measures, but now no one cares, and it makes it look like the site is more active than it really is so the admins are not that bothered either.
I mean I’m in my 50s and for years Reddit was awesome for me. Sure “Reddit” didn’t make all those posts themselves - but they created a space where folks like me could (and did) enjoy contributing and engaging.
Has been getting worse for a long time, but that doesn’t mean it was never good.
I don’t mind that Reddit in some ways profited from the content I contributed- because
I got enormous value from the site and it was 100% free for me
I intentionally was contributing to the site knowing that they would host my content and potentially profit from it.

I still use the same app to access Lemmy me that I did to access Reddit. There’s zero reason for me to go back.
It’s been declining for years but I guess they felt that they needed to accelerate things.
Yep, not logging in, that killed off the last bit of usage I had for reddit.

Note: reddit bad. Also AI plagiarism bad.

On that note, reddit didn’t generate most of that content either.
