Wake me up when their AI can propose and conduct novel scientific experiments.

Maths is an “easy” target for AI because it’s self contained. It’s easier to brute force training data in mathematics when there’s no external forces.

Can’t have that cheat code in science, unless they let their models study the behavior of real ant colonies as part of their reinforcement learning process.

Anti-intellectuals out themselves. Altman is one.

Science isn’t about the answer. Its about the process. Anti-intellectuals vehemently argue until they are blue in the face that the end result is all that matters.

You know, that’s actually one of the very few types of use case where I’d be ok with the massive resource consumption of AI data centers. Just feed enormous volumes of raw sensor data into model training and see if it comes up with patterns and connections that we didn’t notice.

We do use AI to do it. A lot, actually. And the AI hardware boom has been amazing to all sorts of large dataset studies.

But once we find a pattern, we have to find why the pattern exists.
