It would be better if lemmy/piefed supported treating mastodon posts as cross-postable, and better still if it auto-detected a link to a fediverse post and at least suggested a cross-post instead of a link post. Comments could turn into repiles, further cross-posts (or even the original) could show up as boosts or quote-toots, upvotes into stars.
In particular, I want the 100s of MB of JS so that I can send David a star; I have the firefox extension that automatically finds the post from my home instance if I want to interact with it, since I’m on a personal computer and already singed-in to my home instance, the bookmarking action is almost transparent, tho it does cause a full-page load.
No need to render 100s MB of JS, just to see a two-panel meme.

i think this runs the same problem of how search engines adopting AI summaries are starving their sources of traffic
Pls explain so I also don’t make same mistake. How is an avif upload more efficient than a pasted link?
The image preview was cropped on Voyager. And maybe it’s my connection but i could watch the website building itself over multiple seconds.
Link loads large data. Image loads small data.
Why use many data when few data do trick?
This is super backwards to me, isn’t a link just a string of characters whereas an image is like tons of strings basically?
Yes, but you have to click the link and load a webpage, and a webpage (usually) has way more data than an image
