A refrigerator should never need an update. Smart appliances are the stupidest shit I ever heard of. A refrigerator should not need anything but an outlet and maybe a water connection.

look, i wouldn’t mind a dashboad where i could see when the dishwasher was run, that the rinse fluid is low, the temperature in the fridge ans freezer over time, how many times the ice machine refilled, when the AC on…

smart devices could have been cool.

what we got was the ability for the power company to turn of my fridge, requiring a broken app to run cycles on a dishwasher, and spying for no benefit in every device.

The idea has promise and i hold a small glimmer of hope for home assistant. But, like so many things companies did not give anyone what they wanted.

What would be really cool is if a fridge kept track of how fresh everything was, and alerted users when food spoiled, or was about to spoil, or on track to spoil given how seldom it was consumed.

I can’t tell you how many times yogurt or sour cream has gone bad in my fridge because everyone forgets it’s in there.

Also, detecting ice buildup and consequently adjusting humidity or water flow to the ice maker etc

i doubt it can tell that things are spoiling or moldy, decomposition, spoiling is a complex process, and may look normal ont eh surface but actually went bad if you "smell taste it.

More likely would be a system that uses cameras to see what you put in, alongside a program to identify what type of item it is, and a record of its estimated time of spoiling. Say you put in a pack of bagels, and the fridge deduces it is a new pack because you haven’t recently taken bagels out. The fridge estimates they will probably last 1-2 weeks. Then depending on how much they are removed and put back in, it might throw a reminder on the screen “bagels still good?” etc

One of the reasons techies are burning out is because they are tired of seeing the promise of a new tech and watching it be used to enable surveillance.

For a fridge the functionality as an appliance shouldn’t be linked to the functionality as a device with a web browser. Ice bucket low? Sensor sends signal to app, fine. But the fridge doesn’t need to know that; it can keep using the float switch or whatever it used to before “smart”. Temperature tracking same thing - bolt a sensor and hook it to the app, but don’t use that app and sensor to control the fridge.

But to build an ecosystem like that you’d need a developer, you can’t just slop together an app, have you thought about the cost? And the shareholders!!

Samsung has apologized and will send engineers over the Chuseok break.

Yeah? Will those Samsung engineers also replace my spoiled food? Of course not, shame on me for buying an AI fridge I guess

If I bought an AI Fridge and this happened, I would most certainly immediately decide and accept “This is the direct consequence of my choices. This is my fault. I had this coming. I deserve this.”

What can an AI do for our fridge? I asked myself as I swiped my credit card for a multi thousand dollar purchase. Surely it must do something. Surely this must be an improvement on a dumb box that keeps things cold. I want to talk to my dumb box that keeps things cold, this is certainly a good idea.

            You’d think so!

Unfortunately it just permanently listens to everything going on in your house, tracks every family member’s sleep cycles, eating habits, evaluates your household income based on how often it is restocked and what your brand loyalties are, then feeds all that information to a third party advertising company who sell it to the highest bidder and split the profits with smasnug before showing everyone in the home exactly the right ads to manipulate them into buying more slop.

Now being serious, and not reading about it, my best guess would be automated invertory ledger. Looking what you take and in what quantities, what you put in etc. and holding that. Coupled with you marking what shit should not go “out of stock”, fridge then can inform you if last piece is taken via on-door screen or an app.

Like, ding dong, Lizzy took last piece of “fuck my life cheese”. xD

That could be the best for ADHD folks, lol

i think the only way to have this is if you actually build it yourself from some kind of open source diy kit, because no company would ever sell something like this unless it could turn it into a subscription that will brick itself if you stop paying >.<

They just have to add useless shit into something like a fridge and make everything “smart”. The profit margins must be so slim on any kind of standard house appliance. They can’t just seel a fridge that just keeps your food cold, isn’t too expensive, noisy, etc… because most of the offer that and they need this summers buzzword to stand out, or even to please the investors.

This is dumb, but what’s even dumber is making a device that can even fail in that way to start with. I’d have expected the core refrigerator function to be isolated in some way from the rest of the device.

Nothing. Is made. Correctly. Anymore. I went to school for industrial design, and I can comfortably say design and how to communicate proper use are fucking dead. Some thing or website or service is made wrong every fucking time I turn around. It is relentless and unreal.

Yup. I was always grappling with form/ function and balance that benefit the user. Seems it’s now ennshittification and subscription are the drivers.

I can see the brief now.

      1. Must have at least one subscription feature
      2. Should make the user mad
      3. Every aspect should have control but is… Extra bonus if does not ever en fulfil its purpose.

And don’t grey out or hide any of the subscription features, just have it not work, and let them wonder what the fuck is happening. And remove the map link. We don’t want them just, like, clicking that so they can get here easily. And make sure ads load as they scroll, so it keeps moving the page. That should happen seventeen times.

“pay double for smart version, then get fucked.”

Previously it was “pay double for same quality but more popular brand”. How far advertising has progressed that people sign up for this willingly.

It is always interesting to see that this scumbag corporate behavior is only made possible by the people handing them over money.

It is the same with advertising, if i didnt know any better it appears like people want advertisements all the time.

We, the people, are always outraged. However, we, the people, also arent willing to do anything about it. The power is in our hands.

      The refrigerators are truly terrible.

All their other appliances are perfectly fine. Just don’t connect them to the internet. In fact, don’t connect any of your appliances to the internet. Ever.

I had a client who bought a house with a Whirlpool double oven that connected to the internet, and it locked itself out because it thought the oven had been stolen.

I had to replace the control panel. It cost $1,100.

Is there some sort of epidemic of people stealing double ovens from homes? Why does a double oven need a touchscreen and a Wi-Fi connection? It even has a sensor for the ambient temperature in the kitchen.

An oven is supposed to do one thing: heat your food. That’s it. It shouldn’t be able to prepare your teenager for the SATs.
