The part where Nike didn’t give up creative or manufacturing (or distribution) control is totally believable - the part I’m struggling to find credible is that he couldn’t then find anyone willing to agree to manufacture shoes to his specs and then let him arrange for distribution. That’s… just not how that works. Donald “the rapist” Trump can figure out how to do that, but Ye couldn’t?
I can totally believe nobody came to him about it, but all that means is he didn’t want to work with a generic brand he approached. It would have been almost trivial to solve the problem if he were serious about an affordable clothing brand, rather than a trendy clothing brand.

What he is describing being unable to find is called called DFMA or Private Label Manufacturing - and I’m failing to think up an industry where its more common than footwear (probably electronics). It is completely the norm in shoe manufacturing and it has been for decades.

Then he went back to being a hardcore Christian and got on TV and said he loved Hitler because Jesus tells you to love everyone. He was going to record an album in Uganda until he wasn’t and then didn’t. And through it all he was known for just straight up strange behavior. Claiming he was a genius, being mad about not getting credit for leather jogging pants, frequently stopping concerts to go on nonsensical rants about whatever was on his mind at the time, he walked around in a full face mask covered in diamonds, etc…
Most people track it back to about the time his mom died. I think his long-term girlfriend left him around then too. I don’t know if that’s accurate but it seems we went from Graduation to 808s and Heartbreak and then after that it was all, “I’m a piece of shit who’s addicted to sex” and he never recovered
