Blue shift occurs because young voters, low-income voters, and voters who relocate often are likely both to vote provisionally and to lean Democratic.

It also happens because Republicans like to make it difficult for people who are not cisgender wealthy white conservative christian men to vote.

Many states have little to no protections for workers to take time off to vote (most states provide 1-2 hours off), select polling locations that are difficult to walk or ride public transit to, and understaff workers in polling locations to ensure long wait times in non-white neighborhoods.

Then, when volunteer programs spring up to do things like drive people to the polls or distribute water and snacks to people in line, they outlaw those actions.

This is why they’re also against absentee and provisional ballots, since they enable working-class, disabled, and other ‘undesirable’ people to vote.

Yeah… But it’s the shithole I grew up in, and I can’t imagine leaving my grandparents behind who are too old to move.

That’s why I volunteer as an election inspector and with some local voter registration groups- we won’t see things change until people feel empowered to make a difference and put someone other than a fascist, spineless fuck, or corporate-owned bastard in office.

You forgot that they close polling stations in districts that vote against them and make it illegal to give food and water to people in line to vote.

I explicitly mentioned making it illegal to give food and water to people waiting in line and included a link to a news article about the Georgia law that outlawed doing so.

That first point is a good one though, I’m not familiar with it but am totally unsurprised it’s happening.

My point was that the latter part is to make the pain from the first part worse. It’s a deliberate combination. Make waits longer and make people suffer during the wait.
