    Rustin was a gay man who worked closely with MLK. Rustin never tried to get MLK to speak on gay rights during the Civil Rights era because Rustin realized it would be much too controversial.

    Frederick Douglas worked for Abe Lincoln’s election in 1860, even though Lincoln wasn’t going to push for abolition. There was a full on Abolition candidate in the race, but Douglas decided it was smarter to push the candidate with the best chance of winning and have a place at the table.
