Ubuntu has the largest community of support, making Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu while having a more elegant variety of UI, making it a good compromise. Good choice.

They do have a version that uses a plain Debian base, so they’re not reliant on Canonical. That version is LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition).
