Remember, Russia is primarily relying on glide bombs to put artillery pressure on the front because Ukraine has so effectively denied Russia the ability to move its artillery into forward threatening positions.
Ukraine’s use of drones here thus could collapse the Russian war machine if Ukraine gets good enough at this.
I have made this point before but this is precisely why helicopters that can mount radars are more relevant than ever and more survivable than fixed wing aircraft, they aren’t tied to massive static airbases and infrastructure.
Or, you know, the ability to fuel aircraft that are already airborne so that you can maintain a constantly ariel surveillance and can stage your high value aircraft further from the field of operations.
The fact that Russia has never been able to actually operationalize this basic necessity is a good example of why they have never actually been a peer military to NATO.
scrambling an aircraft to avoid UAV’s is a fairly good tactic when there’s no proper shelters. shelters are very expensive to build, and that money and effort is going other places 🤷
Traditional shelters are expensive. I feel like a shelter that can resist suicide drones can be built much lighter than the usually bomb-resistant, heavy blast proof shelters you usually see.
It’s definitely cheaper than losing planes
Ukraine has demonstrated that they know how to use different drone tactics to circumvent various types of defenses. There have been plenty of videos showing successful drone attacks getting past nets, flying into bunkers, dealing with tank modifications, etc.
