Isn’t stochastic terrorism—the idea that vilifying public rhetoric raises the expectation of a shooting—an argument against free speech?

I recall left-leaning media denouncing that argument. In the wake of the Charlie Kirk shooting, MSNBC fired Matthew Dowd over recalling that idea by characterizing Kirk as

one of the most divisive, especially divisive younger figures in this, who is constantly sort of pushing this sort of hate speech or sort of aimed at certain groups. And I always go back to, hateful thoughts lead to hateful words, which then lead to hateful actions.

with the Daily Show joining its condemnation

I don’t know, man. The whole idea of free speech in America is you can say what you want and not expect to be shot. Can you be challenged? Sure. Can you get roasted online? Sometimes.

After Jimmy Kimmel Live! was restored, the Daily Show celebrated a free speech victory & criticized claims in the media that abusive, name-calling rhetoric promotes escalations to violence

We would definitely have a healthier political discourse if we weren’t constantly calling each other fascists & communists & Nazis. But we are the only place in the world where this shit happens all the time, but we’re not the only place in the world that name calls. So, what is this?

So, I thought the left were back on board with free speech.
