The company further claimed that the European Commission has almost exclusively focused its enforcement measures on Apple. The iPhone manufacturer has been targeted by the commission five times, which it says is more than all other competitors combined.

That’s because you have significantly more restrictions than all other competitors combined.

the commission should preventively sue google for what they are planning to do with their full lockdown of android in 2 years. their plans almost certainly violate the dma by artificially restricting 3rd party app stores. bonus point would be that apple couldn’t say this anymore.

        Yeah well:

        1. That’s then and this is now
        2. They haven’t even figured out how to effectively stop Apple so I’m not too confident in their abilities.

It’s like Jack the Ripper complaining about the police chasing him, with all the other murderers that are also around.

We should also get rid of seatbelts, and let construction workers put asbestos back into things then. How dare these laws inconvenience a multi-trillion dollar corporation

Unfair competition: The DMA’s rules only apply to Apple, even though Samsung is the smartphone market leader in Europe, and Chinese companies are growing fast. Apple has led the way in building a unique, innovative ecosystem that others have copied — to the benefit of users everywhere. But instead of rewarding that innovation, the DMA singles Apple out while leaving our competitors free to continue as they always have.

I don’t get this? isn’t samsung android based which allows sideloading by defaul?

It’s a strawman argument yes, but it is soon to not be the case because of changes to sideloading on the android side.

That is true, but rooted devices, non-certfied android devices, and adb still allows users to sideload without restriction though the direction is concerning.

Rooted devices & custom roms, depending on your jurisdiction are illegal or might as well be, they also require a intermediate tech knowledge, and in the case of custom ROMs, google just gutted the development cycle for aosp. Adb is by definition for developers, and I don’t know what you mean by non-certified android devices.

All in all, it seems like only tech enthusiasts living in places that are pro right to own & repair will ever take advantage of this, which means in practice, there are only two platforms for the average consumer and both are attempting to stop you from circumventing their walled gardens.

“Why won’t you guys think of the children!”

With the recent push for age verification in the UK, they saw an opening that will let them wall up the garden again.
