i think that chemical imbalance exists and is real but is only the immediate cause of depression. if you dig deeper, in 90% of cases you will find that the chemical imbalance is itself caused by bad situation/ living conditions. so, both are correct. bad living conditions are the ultimate cause for most depressions, but also, chemical imbalances is what you can detect in the brain of patients with depression. but the chemicals are merely the mediators, not the cause of the depression.

It’s like saying pain is responsible for my legs hurting. It’s not a cause and claiming it is does a disservice to anyone with depression
